  • Integrating hydrogeological and economic analyses of groundwater flooding in an urban aquifer

Vincenzo Allocca, Laura Castellucci et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

The study applies the defensive expenditure approach via hydrogeological data for a sector of the plain of Naples to value the economic damages produced by groundwater flooding on private properties. It follows from the integrated analysis that the value of the economic damages is increasing over time at a compound pace. The over-pumping of groundwater during the industrialisation period, and its stop in the subsequent de-industrialisation one, i…

  • Climate impacts on nutrition and labor supply disentangled – an analysis for rural areas of Uganda

Open Access•Chiara Antonelli, Manuela Coromaldi et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Development…•2021

The entire agricultural supply chain, from crop production to food consumption, is expected to suffer significant damages from climate change. This paper empirically investigates the effects of warming on agricultural labor supply through variation in dietary intake in rural Uganda. We examine labor supply, food consumption, and overall social welfare under various climate change scenarios. First, we combine nationally representative longitudinal…

  • Climate variability and agricultural production efficiency

Sabrina Auci, Manuela Coromaldi•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

It is known that climate and weather variability have negative impacts on agricultural production efficiency. The aim of this study is to analyse the impact of climatic variables on farms’ efficiency in Ethiopia making use of nationally representative datasets from Living Standards Measurement Study – Integrated Surveys on Agriculture (LSMS-ISA) 2011/2012. By using the Stochastic Frontier Approach, we estimate simultaneously the farmers’ optimal …

  • The impact of weather fluctuations and climate shocks on farmers’ welfare

    Manuela Coromaldi•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

This paper examines the welfare effect of inter- and intra-seasonal weather shocks using a nationally representative dataset. Results show that both rainfall and maximum temperature variability appear to exert a negative impact on the considered outcomes. Higher between-years average of rainfall implies an increase in income. This impact is nonlinear when the shock is computed over shorter reference periods and is higher in the upper tail of the …

  • Innovation for climate change adaptation and technical efficiency

  • The impact of climate change on the distribution of rural income in Ethiopia

Sabrina Auci, Laura Castellucci et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018

Recent evidence suggests that global climate change is likely to increase the incidence of environmental disasters, as well as the frequency of extreme weather events. As a result, it is generally recognized that climate and weather variability has negative impacts on households’ welfare relying mainly on agriculture. In Ethiopia, 95% of the population depends on rain-fed agriculture and consequently the economic impact of climate change is cruci…

  • Reforming Family Transfers in Southern Europe

    Open Access•Matthew Matsaganis, Cathal O’donoghue et al.•ARTICLE•Social Policy and Society•2006•Cited by: 4•References: 3

The drive to reduce child poverty is of particular interest in southern Europe, where public assistance to low-income families with children is often meagre or not available at all. The paper examines the effect of income transfers to families in Greece, Italy, Spain and Portugal using a benefit-tax model. The distributional impact of actual programmes is shown to be weak, hence the scope for reform great. As an illustration, the European benefit…

  • Child Poverty and Family Transfers in Southern Europe

    Open Access•Matthew Matsaganis, Cathal O’donoghue et al.•PREPRINT•SSRN Electronic Journal•2005

The drive to reduce child poverty is of particular interest in southern Europe, where the subsidiary role of the State in matters of family policy has implied that programmes of public assistance to poor families with children are often meagre or not available at all. The paper examines the effect of family transfers (used broadly to include contributory family allowances, non-contributory child benefits and tax credits or allowances) on child po…
