  • Local Mythography

Daniel W Berman•CHAPTER•The Oxford Handbook of Greek and…•2022

“Local mythography” is a problematic category, though there is little question that many surviving mythographical texts could be defined as such. This chapter begins with a theoretical discussion that seeks to contextualize both the “local” and “mythic” components of the concept and continues by examining two case studies: one an early “local” mythographer by the name of Armenidas, and the other the tradition of “Atthidography,” the chronicling o…

  • Cities-Before-Cities

    Daniel W Berman•BOOK•Myths on the Map•2017•Cited by: 2

Foundation myths are a crucial component of many Greek cities’ identities. But the mythic tradition also represents many cities and their spaces before they were cities at all. This study examines three of these ‘prefoundational’ narratives: stories of cities-before-cities that prepare, configure, or reconfigure, in a conceptual sense, the mythic ground for foundation. ‘Prefoundational’ myths vary in both form and function. Thebes, before it was …

  • Myth, Literature, and the Creation of the Topography of Thebes

    Open Access•Daniel W Berman•BOOK•Myth, Literature, and the…•2015

How does a city's legendary past affect its present? Thebes remains a city with one of the richest traditions of myth in all of Greece - it was the home of Cadmus, Oedipus, and Hercules, and the traditional birthplace of Dionysus. The city's topography, both natural and built, very often plays a significant role in its myths. By focusing on Greek literature ranging from the oral epics to the travel writing of the Roman Empire, this book explores …

  • Myth and History in Ancient Greece

Claude Calame, Daniel W Berman•BOOK•Myth and History in Ancient Greece•2003

Surely the ancient Greeks would have been baffled to see what we consider their "mythology." Here, Claude Calame mounts a powerful critique of modern-day misconceptions on this front and the lax methodology that has allowed them to prevail. He argues that the Greeks viewed their abundance of narratives not as a single mythology but as an "archaeology." They speculated symbolically on key historical events so that a community of believing citizens…
