Violence against women in Chile: A criminogenic approach to guide public policy in the global south
Violence against women is a pervasive social issue across the Global South, and Chile is no exception. This study aims to identify and analyze the criminogenic factors associated with violence against women in the cities of Concepción, Santiago, and Valparaíso during the period 2015–2019. Analysis of the Flow of Offenders to the Metropolitan Region of Chile
This study, based on data from 2015 to 2019 on the movement of offenders to the Metropolitan Region of Chile, uses Poisson and Negative Binomial models to analyze the flow of offenders from other Chilean regions. It confirms that factors such as gender, educational level, location of crime, and type of crime significantly motivate displacement. The profile of the typical offender is an educated man who commits crimes against property on public ro…
Human-nature interactions in the Afrotropics: Experiential and cognitive connections among urban residents in southern Nigeria
Many people are losing direct contact with nature, a phenomenon termed as the extinction of experience. Urban dwellers are particularly affected by this process that influences public health and habitat conservation. We explored the extinction of experience among the urban populace in Nigeria, a clear Global South representative with rapidly increasing human population. We interviewed 600 adults from several cities and performed statistical tests…
Conceptualizations of Happiness and Vegetarianism: Empirical Evidence from University Students in Spain
Vegetarianism improves human and planetary health in addition to animal welfare. Motivations for meat-reduced diets include health-related and ethical reasons, with the latter being the main driver for eschewing meat. However, evidence on vegetarian happiness is inconclusive and the results reported are mixed. This constitutes a challenge for policy aiming to encourage people to shift toward plant-based diets. In this research, we aim to provide …
How does sustainable water consumption in the shower relate to different dimensions of perceived well-being? Empirical evidence from university students
Water scarcity is already a worrying issue and it is predicted to get worse in the future. This creates an imperative to use water efficiently and sustainably. In the domestic sphere, one of the main uses of water is showering, not only for hygiene reasons but also as a wellness activity. In order to gain insight into the implications of sustainable shower use, in this paper we analyse the relationship between subjective well-being and water cons…

What is Sumak Kawsay? A Qualitative Study in the Ecuadorian Amazon
A qualitative study of the main characteristics of sumak kawsay ( buen vivir, living well/good life) in the Ecuadorian Amazon shows that it has four constitutive elements of which a multitude of interpretations coexist: an indigenous and nature-focused worldview, community, an economy based on solidarity, and ancestral knowledge. Understandings of sumak kawsay are rooted in the practices and beliefs of the communities interviewed rather than in t…

Is time really important for research into contracting out public services in cities? Evidence for urban water management in Southern Spain
Why Do Local Governments Privatize the Provision of Water Services? Empirical Evidence From Spain
Why do some local governments privatize water services, while others opt for public management? Economic literature has been unable to demonstrate that private management is more efficient than public management, so there must be other reasons that lead governments to privatize the service. But what are they? This paper presents the results of a study that analyses the factors behind the privatization of water services with data from 741 municipa…
A Duration Model for the Estimation of the Contracting Out of Urban Water Management in Southern Spain
Research that tries to explain the decisions of local government in the contracting out of certain services frequently disregards the temporal dimension. In this article, the authors take time into account in the analysis, proposing a duration model as an alternative to discrete choice models. The objective is to analyze the explanatory factors in the contracting out of municipal services. This methodology is applied to the water services of 744 …
