  • Musealization of Wawel Castle 1945–61 – Royal heritage and political legitimacy in early socialist Poland

    Open Access•Mikolaj Getka-Kenig•ARTICLE•Museum History Journal•2025

This article’s aim is to analyse why Poland’s socialist authorities decided to transform Wawel Castle into a historic house museum and how they took advantage of its new role in order to bolster their political legitimacy during their rule’s initial period. My argument is that Wawel Castle’s transformation into a historic house museum was motivated by the building’s status as the ultimate national symbol and its specific geopolitical situation. S…

  • Aristocratic collections after the fall of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, 1800–1830

    Open Access•Mikolaj Getka-Kenig•ARTICLE•Journal of the History of…•2025

This article is devoted to the historical aristocratic collections that, at the beginning of the nineteenth century, were owned by descendants of the magnates of the former Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth and made accessible to the public. This phenomenon is interpreted as a manifestation of the adaptation of the post-magnate group to new political, social and cultural realities in centralized and bureaucratic states such as Austria, Prussia and t…

  • Commemorative Architecture, Periclean Athens and the Polish Revolution of 1791

    Open Access•Mikolaj Getka-Kenig•ARTICLE•Classical Receptions Journal•2023•References: 11

Auguste de Choiseul-Gouffier’s design for the Temple of Providence in Warsaw, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth’s capital, is the earliest known evidence of European fascination with the Parthenon as a model for modern commemorative architecture. However, it was this proposal’s specific political context which makes it especially interesting from the perspective of classical reception studies. It was an artistic reaction of an aristocratic philh…

  • Inwentaryzacja polskich strat wojennych w zakresie zabytków architektury (1940–1950)

    Open Access•Mikolaj Getka-Kenig•ARTICLE•Kwartalnik Historii Kultury…•2023

W moich badania…

  • Usurpation of Aristocratic Privilege and the Social Identity of the Polish Noble Elite in the Period of the Partitions

    Open Access•Mikolaj Getka-Kenig•ARTICLE•Kwartalnik Historyczny•2022

The aristocratic titles, which the partitioning monarchies granted to some of their Polish noble subjects in the long nineteenth century, did not play a decisive role in the development and formation of the modern Polish noble elite. The foreign titles could only sanction the internal noble hierarchy, which was apparently much more determined by specific noble traditions and the cult of the pre-partition past. This argument is evidenced by the ca…

Przedmiotem niniejszego artykułu jest obecność kwestii z zakresu budownictwa cywilnego w pracach Rady Administracyjnej, najwyższego kolegialnego organu władzy rządowej konstytucyjnego Królestwa Polskiego (1815–1830). • The ancient Roman tradition and the Polish idea of the senate in the Age of Enlightened Classicism, 1764-1831

    Mikolaj Getka-Kenig•ARTICLE•Classical Receptions Journal•2014

In 1859, Jozefat Ohryzko, a Polish jurist and editor of historical sources, harshly reviewed the second edition of The History of Slavic Jurisprudence, a monumental six-volume work written by the noted Slavist Wacław Aleksander Maciejowski which had been published nearly three decades earlier. The comparatively young reviewer had no qualms in indicating that his much older fellow scholar had made many mistakes in terms of his historical accuracy.…
