  • From the Inside Out

    Open Access•John D French, John French et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Ethnicity and…•2010•References: 9

Since the fall of communism, democracy has come to be seen as the ‘only game in town’– the only legitimate form of political system. Democracy is considered legitimate because it provides for individual rights and allows the people access to the resources of the state. If ‘we the people’ defines the limits of these entitlements, the next logical question is who are ‘the people’? In contemporary developed states, the problem of diversity is most o…

Buprenorphine is being introduced as a new treatment drug for narcotics addiction in the United States. The authors were asked by the National Institute on Drug Abuse to conduct a field trial to determine if buprenorphine might play a role in street markets. Because no street use of the drug existed in the United States, the authors used three sources of information: (a) "street readings" of clinical studies, (b) Internet discussion lists, and (c…

  • Charging elders

    Open Access•John French•ARTICLE•Critical Social Policy•1995•References: 2

This paper argues that the two thematic constructions in the Fowler and Griffiths reports have combined to create financial diswelfares for elder customers of community care. It is argued that decentralised systems of charging have to date created territorial inequalities es pecially for elders in receipt of means-tested benefits. The paper reviews the incidence of reliance on, and evidence of, underclaim in welfare benefit entitlements in relati…
