Advancing green space equity via policy change
Urban green spaces – including parks, trees, and other vegetated areas – are inequitably distributed in cities worldwide, as underserved groups, such as low-income and people of color, have significantly lower provisions of such resources. Motivated by the health benefits of green spaces, advocates and policymakers in several countries have sought to ameliorate these systemic inequities by implementing green space equity initiatives. Many such in…
The Dynamic Relationship between Social Cohesion and Urban Green Space in Diverse Communities
Social cohesion is a key factor within social determinants of health and well-being. Urban green spaces can provide environments that potentially facilitate meaningful and positive social interactions that promote social cohesion, equity, human health, and well-being. However, the lack of integration of existing research on social cohesion, urban green spaces, and public health in diverse (e.g., racially and ethnically) communities limits cultura…
The Relationship between Social Cohesion and Urban Green Space
Social cohesion involves the interpersonal dynamics and sense of connection among people. Increased social cohesion can be associated with various physical and psychological health benefits. The presence of urban green spaces can encourage positive social interactions that cultivate social cohesion in ways that enhance health and well-being. Urban green spaces have also been linked to positive health behaviors and outcomes including increased phy…

Relationships between Characteristics of Urban Green Land Cover and Mental Health in U.S. Metropolitan Areas
Urbanization increases risk for depression and other mental disorders. A growing body of research indicates the natural environment confers numerous psychological benefits including alleviation of mental distress. This study examined land cover types and landscape metrics in relation to mental health for 276 U.S. counties within metropolitan areas having a population of 1 million or more. County Health Rankings and Behavioral Risk and Factor Surv…

Preventing Pregnancy in Kenya Through Distribution and Use of the CycleBeads Mobile Application
CONTEXT: Given the proportion of Kenyan women not using hormonal contraceptives, the country appears to have a substantial need for a modern, natural family planning option. The CycleBeads® mobile phone application (app), a digital platform for the Standard Days Method® of family planning, could help address this issue. METHODS: After the CycleBeads app was promoted in Kenya in May-June 2015, a three-month pilot study was conducted to collect qua…
Urban Green Space and the Pursuit of Health Equity in Parts of the United States
Research has demonstrated that inequitable access to green space can relate to health disparities or inequalities. This commentary aims to shift the dialogue to initiatives that have integrated green spaces in projects that may promote health equity in the United States. Specifically, we connect this topic to factors such as community revitalization, affordable housing, neighborhood walkability, food security, job creation, and youth engagement. …

Public Parks and Wellbeing in Urban Areas of the United States
Sustainable development efforts in urban areas often focus on understanding and managing factors that influence all aspects of health and wellbeing. Research has shown that public parks and green space provide a variety of physical, psychological, and social benefits to urban residents, but few studies have examined the influence of parks on comprehensive measures of subjective wellbeing at the city level. Using 2014 data from 44 U.S. cities, we …
Advancing Sustainability through Urban Green Space
Urban green spaces provide an array of benefits, or ecosystem services, that support our physical, psychological, and social health. In many cases, however, these benefits are not equitably distributed across diverse urban populations. In this paper, we explore relationships between cultural ecosystem services provided by urban green space and the social determinants of health outlined in the United States Healthy People 2020 initiative. Specific…
Approaching Environmental Health Disparities and Green Spaces
Health disparities occur when adverse health conditions are unequal across populations due in part to gaps in wealth. These disparities continue to plague global health. Decades of research suggests that the natural environment can play a key role in sustaining the health of the public. However, the influence of the natural environment on health disparities is not well-articulated. Green spaces provide ecosystem services that are vital to public …
Promoting Environmental Justice Through Urban Green Space Access
This article reviews literature on the connection between urban green space access and environmental justice. It discusses the dynamics of the relationship as it relates to factors such as environmental quality, land use, and environmental health disparities. Urban development stresses the landscape and may compromise environmental quality. Since some communities are disproportionately impacted by changes in land use and land cover, understanding…
Coupling biogeochemical cycles in urban environments
Urban green space is purported to offset greenhouse‐gas (GHG) emissions, remove air and water pollutants, cool local climate, and improve public health. To use these services, municipalities have focused efforts on designing and implementing ecosystem‐services‐based “green infrastructure” in urban environments. In some cases the environmental benefits of this infrastructure have been well documented, but they are often unclear, unquantified, and/…
Adding the Standard Days Method® to the contraceptive method mix in a high-prevalence setting in Peru
Adding SDM to a program's existing contraceptive method mix can increase coverage even in an already high-CPR setting. Most women who choose SDM do not switch from any other modern family planning method. Continuation compares well with other modern user-directed methods. SDM effectiveness, when offered in regular service delivery circumstances, compares well to efficacy trial findings

Phaedrus writes in a period when speaking out, even briefly, could prove catastrophic. He suggests that his own choices sparked a prosecution by Sejanus but, despite this calamity, he will run the same risks. With first-hand access as Augusti libertus , it is not difficult to construct a Phaedrus who criticizes high level inequalities and injustices. Phaedrus' re-clothing of Aesop's Greek prose fables in Latin verse is a master stroke. Fable is t…
The World of Ion of Chios
Sixteen international contributors investigate the life, works and reception of Ion of Chios (490/80-420s BC), the prolific Greek writer famed in antiquity for his polyeideia. His extraordinary range of writings in prose and poetry across multiple genres include tragedy, elegy, history, biography, mythography and philosophy. Ion is important to any study of Classical Greece because of the literary innovations which he pioneered. He is significant…

Chapter Seventeen. Ion’s hymn to Kairos
Ion of Chios wrote a hymn to Kairos. Nothing survives but this 'title', attested six hundred years on by the periegete Pausanias. The antiquarian-oriented poet Antimachus named one of Adrastus' horses a fragment suggests that Menander made kairos a god. Kairos is commonly translated as opportunity. This is a later sense; indeed, kairos eventually becomes synonymous with chronos or time, and, as such, it is understandable why it is often associate…
Adverse outcomes of planned and unplanned pregnancies among users of natural family planning
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine prospectively whether unplanned pregnancies are associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes among users of natural family planning. METHODS: Women who became pregnant while using natural family planning were identified in five centers worldwide: there were 373 unplanned and 367 planned pregnancies in this cohort. The subjects were followed up at 16 and 32 weeks' gestation and after delivery. T…
