  • Max Weber und die preußischen Junker

Cornelius Torp•BOOK•Max Weber und die preußischen…•2025

In this study, Cornelius Torp presents the first detailed analysis of Max Webers attitude towards the Prussian landed gentry, the so-called Junkers. Througout his life Weber was a sharp critic of Junkerdom. For Weber, the Junkers were the epitomi of the Wilhelminian social system. He regarded their position in state and society as the key to the social and political structure of the German empire and its cleavages.

  • The Pension Crisis and the 'Demographic Time Bomb: Perceptions and Misperceptions in Great Britain and Germany at the Turn of the Millennium

    Open Access•Cornelius Torp•ARTICLE•The English Historical Review•2021

At the turn of the millennium, Germany and the United Kingdom experienced the most severe crises of their pension systems since the Second World War. In both cases, politicians reacted with extensive reforms. The political debates in each country revolved around the notion that demographic ageing was at the root of the crises. Hence, the call for greater intergenerational equity became the key justification of fundamental pension-system reform. B…

  • Glücksspiel und Zivilisierungsmission: Globalgeschichtliche Perspektiven auf das 19. Jahrhundert

    Cornelius Torp•ARTICLE•Geschichte und Gesellschaft•2017•References: 3

In the nineteenth century, the crusade against gambling became a global trend. It was deeply embedded in the civilizing mission of Western nations, which sought to uplift both their own lower classes and other “uncivilized” parts of the world. The anti-gambling movement was rooted in ideas like the bourgeois work ethic and its norms of discipline, temperance and merit. Most European countries reacted to the anti-gambling pressure by prohibiting o…

  • The Adenauer Government’s Pensions Reform of 1957—a Question of Justice

    Cornelius Torp•ARTICLE•German History•2016•Cited by: 3

The pensions reform of 1957 marked a turning point in the history of the German welfare state, ushering in a root-and-branch reorganization of the old-age pension system in order to ‘secure living standards’. The present article seeks to identify the key values underpinning this reconfiguration and finds that norms of social justice were of central importance. The normative backbone of the Adenauer government’s pensions reform was the notion of p…

  • The Challenges of Globalization: Economy and politics in Germany, 1860-1914

    Cornelius Torp•BOOK•The challenges of globalization•2014

In the mid nineteenth century a process began that appears, from a present-day perspective, to have been the first wave of economic globalization. Within a few decades global economic integration reached a level that equaled, and in some respects surpassed, that of the present day. This book describes the interpenetration of the German economy with an emerging global economy before the First World War, while also demonstrating the huge challenge …

  • Imperial Germany Revisited

Sven Oliver Müller, Cornelius Torp•BOOK•Imperial Germany revisited•2011

The German Empire, its structure, its dynamic development between 1871 and 1918, and its legacy, have been the focus of lively international debate that is showing signs of further intensification as we approach the centenary of the outbreak of World War I. Based on recent work and scholarly arguments about continuities and discontinuities in modern German history from Bismarck to Hitler, well-known experts broadly explore four themes: the positi…

    Open Access•Cornelius Torp•ARTICLE•Central European History•2010•Cited by: 5•References: 31

There has been a good deal of scholarly work on the history of the political economy of the German Empire. This is particularly true for the history of customs and trade policy, which historians identified quite early as a central arena of political conflicts and disputes and to which historians quite often assigned a key role in their competing interpretations of the history of the German Empire
