Beyond ‘ethnic cleansing’: Aspects of the functioning of violence in the Ottoman and post‐Ottoman Balkans
The aim of this essay is to offer a critical discussion of some salient aspects of the role of violence in the Balkans within a broad chronological purview that ranges from the Ottoman period until the mid‐1940s. This study analyzes the continuity and change between pre‐modern and modern functions of violence in the region; explores the ‘national’ and ‘ethnic’ motivation of Balkan violence; and highlights the importance of religion, and its role …
The Macedonian Question: Britain and the Southern Balkans 1939-1949
Although the Macedonian Question and British foreign policy in the Balkans during the 1940s have attracted considerable interest, the relation between the two issues has not received much attention. Its aim is two-fold: first, to investigate British views of and policy towards the Bulgar-Yugosla…
The Quest for Hellenism: Religion, Nationalism and Collective Identities in Greece (1453-1913)
The main aim of this essay is to offer a critical survey of the development of Greek collective identities, between 1453 and 1913. That period witnessed dramatic transformations, and the arrival of a modernising and Westernising wave, which crashed onto the Greek shores in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The ensuing clash between Western and modern ideas of nationalism on the one hand, and time-honoured local mentalities nurtu…

Conquering the souls’: Nationalism and Greek guerrilla warfare in Ottoman Macedonia, 1904-1908
This article aims to analyse the Greek struggle against Bulgarian bands and ‘Bulgarian’ villages in Ottoman Macedonia between 1904 and 1908. Greek views on the necessity of violence, the logic of terror, and guerrilla tactics are examined and set against their particular context. It is argued that the form, purpose and intensity of violence were shaped not only by Greek intentions and peasant reactions, but mainly by the prevalence in Macedonia o…
Truth and ethnic truth in the Balkans (or how Nato 'helped' milosevic)
The article introduces the concept of ethnic truth' in an attempt to understand Balkan responses to western involvement in the recent war in Kosovo. 'Ethnic truth' denotes a particular 'double consciousness' by which the Balkan peoples make sense of the relation between themselves and the 'outside world', and interpret both history and current events. The article analyses the core elements of 'ethnic truth' as well as the processes by which it is…
