  • The origins of the Tiber Island in Rome

Open Access•Andrea L Brock, Luana Motta et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Roman Studies•2026•References: 60

This paper presents the latest results from a geoarchaeological coring survey of Rome’s central river valley: new evidence demonstrates that the Tiber Island did not exist during the early centuries of human habitation at the site of Rome. Instead, the area was characterised by a low, seasonal bar formation on the riverbed, which would conceivably have aided prehistoric fording activity. The Tiber Island first emerged as a permanent land mass as …

  • The process of nucleation amongst the early cities of central Italy in the first millennium BC

    Open Access•Simon Stoddart, Emily M Breslin et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Human Dynamics•2025•References: 43

This article assesses the process of nucleation amongst the early cities of Tyrrhenian central Italy in the first millennium BC. The article examines the advantages, disadvantages and causes of nucleation. A multi-proxy and multi scalar perspective is implemented drawing on the available evidence for ancient DNA, isotopes, pedology/geoarchaeology, animal and plant remains, contextualized within the settlement archaeology. The article contains ori…

  • Mitochondrial DNA Evidence for Community Building and Population Dynamics at a Multi-Phase Roman Site (Gabii, Italy, 8th Century BC– 2nd Century AD)

K Killgrove, Jennifer Klunk et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Mediterranean…•2025

Archaeological work at Gabii in Italy has revealed burials in the settlement area dating to three different time periods: Iron Age, Archaic and Imperial. In this paper, we investigate the genetic characteristics of the people buried at Gabii, integrating mitochondrial DNA evidence with archaeological and historical contexts to address questions about community and population dynamics, such as whether biological lineages persisted through time and…

  • Re-dating Roman Karanis, Egypt: Radiocarbon evidence for prolonged occupation until the seventh century AD

    Open Access•Luana Motta, Tyler D Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2024•References: 27

One century after its initial excavation, this article presents the first absolute chronology for the settlement of Karanis in Egypt. Radiocarbon dates from crops retrieved from settlement structures suggest that the site was inhabited beyond the middle of the fifth century AD, the time at which it was previously believed to have been abandoned. These dates add to the complex picture of population fluctuations and the remodelling and reuse of str…

  • Crop Husbandry at Gabii During the Iron Age and Archaic Period: The Archaeobotanical and Stable Isotope Evidence

Fanny Gavériaux, Luana Motta et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Archaeology•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 19

Intensification of agricultural production to support demographic growth has been invoked as a necessary correlate to the important socio-economic changes involved in the urbanisation process of Western Central Italy at the beginning of the 1st millennium BCE. Yet, the agricultural economy of the early urban centres in the region remains poorly understood. Ongoing excavations at Gabii provide a new substantial archaeobotanical dataset that allows…

  • Reimagining urban success: Rhythms of activity at Gabii, 800 BC-AD 600

Open Access•J Troy Samuels, Jeffrey Samuels et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 25

The ancient city of Gabii-an Italian polity of the first millennium BC and a peer to early Rome-has often been presented as an example of urban decline, a counterpoint to Rome's rise from a collection of hilltop huts to a Mediterranean hegemon. Here the authors draw on the results from recent excavations at Gabii that challenge such simplistic models of urban history. Diachronic evidence documenting activity at the site over the course of 1400 ye…

  • Outside of Crime but Inside the World of Crime: Youth Experiences in the Midst of the War in the Peripheries of Maceió and Belo Horizonte

Open Access•Luana Motta, Luana Dias Motta et al.•ARTICLE•Dilemas - Revista de Estudos de…•2022

This article analyzes youth experiences in the face of criminal governance efforts in the peripheries of Alagoas state capital Maceió and Minas Gerais state capital Belo Horizonte. We consider the experiences of young people who are not involved in crime to demonstrate that being “outside of crime” is not the same as being outside the “world of crime,” in view of the fact that the trajectories of their lives are affected by criminal moral and leg…

  • A Changing Cityscape in Central Italy: The Gabii Project Excavations, 2012–2018

Jeffrey Samuels, Matthew Naglak et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 37

Excavations carried out at the Latin city of Gabii between 2012 and 2018 have contributed new data to a number of debates around the emergence, lived experience, maintenance, decline, and resilience of cities. Gabii’s urban trajectories demonstrate both seemingly familiar forms of urbanism and, on closer study, many locally circumscribed elements. Specifically, the Gabii Project excavations have uncovered an early Iron Age (8th–5th centuries b.c.…

  • On the Banks of the Tiber: Opportunity and Transformation in Early Rome

Open Access•Andrea L Brock, Luana Motta et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Roman Studies•2021•Cited by: 6•References: 36

A geoarchaeological coring survey of the Forum Boarium has shed considerable light on Rome's archaic landscape. We present the first empirical evidence that substantiates ancient and modern assumptions about the existence of a river harbour and ford in early Rome. Prior to the growth of the city, the riverbank — reconstructed as a high ledge at the base of the Capitoline Hill and a low-lying shore north of the Aventine — was particularly advantag…
