John Sharp (1572–1647): Missing Link or Cul-de-Sac in the Evolution of Early Modern Reformed Theology
This article moves from outlining the intellectual history of the Scottish Reformed Theologian John Sharp and his theological output during his time at the Reformed Seminary in Die, France. It argues that Sharp’s exile contributed to his being inoculated from developments in the controversies among the Reformed, and that his work is best understood as continuing a Reformed Polemic against Catholic Theology
Studies in the History of Exegesis
The present volume concerns the history of biblical interpretation and its ongoing significance in light of more cultural and material approaches to scriptural interpretation. The range and variety of insights arising from many key moments in the history of biblical interpretation and the ways in which Auslegungsgeschichte stays close to the words of the biblical text while also interpreting it in light of the message and the needs of the church …
Jeremiah: Truth and Sense in the History of Interpretation
What pre-critical and post-Enlightenment confessional interpretation teach us is to identify with the text's authorial intention or the text speaking for itself. This was understood to be Christological in the early centuries of the church. Then Augustine stood as the fount of a grace-laden interpretation, with the late Medieval and Reformation interpretation emphasising judgement and a sober response thereto, yet also a mystical sense of the cov…
The Book of Jeremiah: Texts and Theology
The History of Scottish Theology, Volume I: Celtic Origins to Reformed Orthodoxy

Looking Backwards: The Protestant Latin Bible in the Eyes of Johannes Piscator and Abraham Calov
According to this chapter, In assessing how much and in what way the Protestant Latin bible was important for Protestants one needs to evaluate what such a thing meant to those who came decades after the main flurry of Latin bible production. It is considered how it featured in the work of two theologians who were active in the early and mid- Seventeenth Century, one Calvinist and the other Lutheran, namely Piscator and Calov. In his Preface to N…

Catholicity and Heresy in the Early Church
The Song of Songs and Christology in the Early Church
Mark W. Elliott presents a range of interpretations of the imagery used in the Song of Songs and demonstrates how the figures of the Bridegroom and Bride were understood. He pays attention to the historical context of those commenting on the Song between the councils of Constantinople 381 and Chalcedon 451, including theological disputes and spiritual movements. Showing how they found significance in such an unlikely text leads on to the conclusi…
