A century of human geography at Stellenbosch University
As part of a special edition of the South African Geographical Journal on the centenary of geography at the University of Stellenbosch, this paper briefly documents the evolution of human geography since 1920 in the department. The paper is structured in three sections. First, a brief account is given of the contribution by an era of Piet Serton, founding professor of the department. Second and third, accounts of the urban and tourism geography s…
Stellenbosch coffee society
Stellenbosch is a university town boasting knowledge-intensive economic sectors with a variety of ‘new economy’ occupations and activities. The presence of a professional and creative class, as well as university students has changed the economy, the retail landscape and the social spaces of the town. This paper reports on an investigation of the geography of coffee shops (third places) in downtown Stellenbosch and describes the social and physic…
Tourism through the lens of a human geographer
My journey with geography started more than 40 years ago when I was introduced to Peter Haggett's (1972) book: Geography: a modern synthesis. In the introductory chapter, the author used the distri
Wine tourism development in South Africa
Wine tourism, which is growing and developing on a global scale, is widely considered a driver of economic and social development in rural areas. Limited job opportunities and unemployment are prevalent in most rural areas, particularly in South Africa. In 2015, the South African wine industry generated close to 300,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities. A geographical analysis of the development and current state of wine tourism in th…

The Victoria and Alfred Waterfront as playground for Capetonians
The paper contributes to the exploration and understanding of the social geographies of public space in the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront (V&AW) in Cape Town. The aim is to understand Capetonians' (visitors and employees) perceptions of the V&AW as public, leisure, shopping and working spaces. The appropriate literature on waterfront developments in providing public, working and leisure space is reviewed. Two questionnaire surveys (visitors and em…
Moulding urban children towards environmental stewardship
The environmental integrity of many urban protected areas in developing countries is at risk and the important mission to reach out to people living close to them provides a special opportunity to spread the conservation message. Guided visitation to urban national parks with the necessary and appropriate interpretation can contribute towards environmental education in general and can also be the point of departure in nurturing environmental stew…

Role of Tourism and Place Identity in the Development of Small Towns in the Western Cape, South Africa
Crime, Perceptions and Touristic Decisionmaking
One of the key challenges for the 2010 World Cup Local Organising Committee and the national government is to provide adequate safety, security and policing to the expected 350,000 international football tourists who are likely to attend the event. Numerous policy frameworks have been put in place. These are briefly discussed as background to empirical findings from a survey among 171 foreign visitors to the country in July 2007. The survey inves…
Communities and Transfrontier Parks in the Southern African Development Community
The merger of three national parks—South Africa's Kruger, Mozambique's Limpopo and Zimbabwe's Gonarezhou—into an 89 000 km2 conservation area—the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park (GLTP)—is supposed to boost tourism, protect biodiversity and promote harmony between neighbouring states in southern Africa (De Villiers, 1999; Hanks, 2000; Rupert, 2001). Not one of the anticipated outcomes will be realized if the position or role of local communities …

Problems associated with tourism development in Southern Africa
The social carrying capacity of Kruger National Park, South Africa
We review the present management policy regarding the tourist carrying capacity of Kruger National Park in the Republic of South Africa. Furthermore, we present a spatial analysis of the pattern of tourist activities in the park, identifying early warning signals of tourist congestion. Lastly, we attempt to establish a sustainable scale for tourism development in the park by using the concept of carrying capacity as a planning tool
Crime
Tourism can play a significant role in overcoming the many socio‐economic challenges South Africa faces, but only if the reality and perception of tourism safety are addressed urgently and adequately as a strategic priority. Here, I analyse the spatial pattern of crime against tourists in South Africa from 1993 to 1996. 'No‐go' areas for tourists are identified and tourist perceptions of personal safety are examined on a region by region basis. T…
