Macro level geoarbitrage and digital nomad policymaking in Portugal
Portugal has become one of the most popular countries for digital nomadism in Europe, with Lisbon being a top-rated destination. The global digital nomad hotspots are usually more affordable destinations in which people can live better with their salaries, escaping the high cost of living in Western countries. As such, digital nomads, similar to other types of lifestyle movers, engage in geoarbitrage – the utilization of opportunities for afforda…
The digital nomad gaze
This ethnographic study explores how digital nomads' engagement with a destination reshapes the traditional tourist gaze. This study uses Chiang Mai, Thailand, as a research case, through ethnographic observations and interviews with digital nomads and locals. The results show that the digital nomads' way of gazing includes the perception and anticipation of a destination as work- and productivity-friendly with required infrastructure, likeminded…

Digital nomadism has become a rapidly growing subject of interest both in the public and scientific domain especially after the COVID-19 pandemic. The geographical framing of digital nomadism and publications in the geographical fora are still scarce. Despite the accelerating trend and potential trans…

Teemme tässä artikkelissa katsauksen vapaa-ajan asumisen tutkimukseen Suomessa. Tämä katsaus perustuu kirjallisuuslähteiden ohella omakohtaiseen kokemukseemme vapaa-ajan asumisen tutkimuksen alalta, jota on kertynyt…

In this editorial we describe the advantages of AI use in research, such as help with quick processing of big research data, managing and analysing data, develop modelling methods and future scenarios. AI can support researchers’ work in many ways, but it should be used with caution. One of the most critical aspects in using AI is the importance of interpretation of the results that it offers. There are still questions about personal data and sec…

Towards an Understanding of Digital Nomadic Mobilities
This paper instigates a discussion on the applicability of a mobility lens to digital nomadism. Digital nomadism defines the lifestyle of highly mobile professionals, known as digital nomads, who work while traveling on a (semi)- permanent basis. Digital nomads encompass the mobility changes that have taken place both at a personal and at a societal level and serve as an example of the mobility changes brought about by “the mobilities turn.” This…

Bordering Mobilities
Trans-border second-home ownership is a growing mobility trend in different parts of the world. This paper employs both a mobilities and border perspective in considering trans-border second-home ownership through the example of Russian second-home mobility in Finland. The analysis highlights the importance of borders and bordering in contemporary trans-border mobilities—an importance that the new paradigm has yet to fully recognize and address. …
