Recently developed through an interdisciplinary and feminist methodology, the Mapping the Production of Knowledge on Women and Gender in the Arab Region (MPK) database is the first publicly available database capturing the research on women and gender in the Arab region since 1970 under the rubric of socialities. Zina Sawaf•ARTICLE•Contemporary Levant•2017•References: 14

While many of these ethnographic practices are an essential part, and a matter of fact, of simply being there, research in Riyadh requires doing fieldwork and bounding the field differently. Swathes of highways and boulevards, endless tracts of walls, individual villas and low-rise apartment buildings come to the fore and make their anonymizing and a…

This article introduces the present special issue, which focuses on the relevance of ethnographic experience to methodological practice and to understanding the conditions of social reality in the Arab region today. The authors frame this focus within an interplay between methodology and knowing the field, passing through the ethnographer’s critical self-awareness about method and prevailing field conditions, which they identify as crisis-ridden …

  • Youth and the revolution in Egypt: What kinship tells us

    Zina Sawaf•ARTICLE•Contemporary Arab Affairs•2013•Cited by: 3•References: 5

Studies of youth in Arab societies have tended to posit and explore their social exclusion, marginalization and even de-politicization. Events sparked by the January 25 uprising in Egypt have reconstructed youth in a contradictory light, hailing them as new symbols of the nation. Careful consideration of current thinking in the anthropology of kinship and the nation, however, cautions the audience of the revolution to think twice. Taking for gran…
