  • Exploring the Contribution of Smartness to Destinations’ Resilience

Oriol Gallardo, Aaron Gutiérrez et al.•ARTICLE•Tourism Planning & Development•2026

This article presents an analytical framework providing a set of measurable dimensions to approach how smartness can contribute to achieving tourism destinations resilience. This framework is developed through a review of the existing literature on both topics, which identifies three core processes in smart tourism destinations and four requisites for achieving resilience. The interrelation between these constructs results in twelve dimensions th…

  • Governance agency in a contested cruise destination: A legitimacy-evolutionary approach

    James E Powell, Robert W Orttung et al.•ARTICLE•Tourism Geographies•2026

This article proposes a framework that explains the evolution of destination governance by examining the power and trust implications of the ways that various stakeholders legitimize their visions of a desirable future. We apply it to the case of Juneau, Alaska, a community and a cruise destination which lacks a comprehensive tourism plan but where governance is evolving due to the long-term confrontation between disputed visions, expectations, a…

  • Touristification, smartization, and social sustainability in European regions

Amit Birenboim, Salvador Anton Clavé et al.•ARTICLE•Current Issues in Tourism•2023

Touristification and smartization processes are commonly associated with economic growth strategies. Here we emphasize and demonstrate the need to consider the implication of these processes on social sustainability. Initial results imply that: (1) regions not specialized in tourism are associated with a lower share of population in poverty; and (2) regions’ ‘smartness’ level is negatively associated with the share of poverty. However, in regions…

    Nicolas Baron, Nacima Baron-Yellès et al.•ARTICLE•Loisir et Société / Society and…•2014•References: 5

The article analyses the relationship between leisure parks and the urban world and begins with the hypothesis that the leisure park may serve as a model for metropolitan reconstruction at the same time that it is a major component of it. This signifies that the leisure park, as an image and as an object, 'permeates' the modern city, both as a microcosm through specific design features, and as a macrocosm through the design of the entire metropol…
