Resisting climate apartheid: Co-creative unlearning of climate-changed geographies
Peer reviewed
Critical reflections on mass tourism and empathy in the works of a Finnish artist
Art and tourism provide a fascinating nexus for creative academic research. This paper explores this connection by interpreting art made about tourists and tourism and by listening to a Finnish artist, Erika Adamsson. Her perspective as well as the theoretical framework of understanding others without hiding stereotypes or challenging issues are discussed. The method used is autoethnographic artwork elicitation. As a result, this paper provides a…
(Un)Learning to Live Together in the Climate-Changed World: Young People’s Lived Planetary Citizenship
The paper frames lived planetary citizenship as a social position and agency that can be developed through (un)learning in formal and informal educational spaces. As part of the special issue on planetary youth research and young people’s eco-emotions, we join in the global ethic approach with emphasis on political agency and a decolonising approach of unlearning. We adopt a pluralist approach to citizenship, starting from a relative critique of …
Unlearning through art: Developing decolonising and empathic pedagogies in climate mobilities education
This paper introduces arts-based participatory research combining decolonising and empathic transformative environmental pedagogies, in the context of climate mobilities education in Finland and Greece. It offers methodological contributions to existing research with emphasis on multimodal arts methods and the role of emotions. We introduce the dimension of empathic unsettlement as a vital element of the transformative unlearning-learning cycle, …
Geopolitics of mobile masses: Refugee and tourist metaphors in Finnish-Russian bordertown media
This paper examines the discourses on mobile others as objects of massification or likened to natural forces. By creating a dialogue between theories of crowds/masses and popular geopolitics, we examine how a local media frames the actual, imagined and absent border crossings of refugees and tourists when a voluminous mobile group disappears in tandem with an emerging unease about a new mobile group. We focus on the freesheet Imatralainen, publis…
Towards an ethical tourism recovery in Northern peripheries
Unsustainable tourism growth prior to the COVID-19 pandemic and disruption of tourism caused by its outbreak, together with the global environmental crisis and different global and local injustices, have raised debates on what tourism should be like in the future. A more ethical tourism sector post-recovery has become a topical issue for strategy making in post-pandemic tourism. In this research note, we tie together local stakeholder views on et…
The Geopolitical Production of Trust Discourses in Finland: Perspectives from the Finnish-Russian Border
This article investigates the formation of trust discourses in Finland towards the Finnish-Russian border. The concept of trust has been neglected in previous border studies literature although it is a significant factor in de- and re-bordering processes. Trust is conceptualized as a social practice which derives from actor relations over time. The article investigates the impact of the Ukrainian crisis on Finnish trust perceptions towards Russia…
Travel agent discourses of mass tourism: Beyond Stereotypes
The widely used term ‘mass tourism’ is often considered as a self-explanatory concept that refers to an unpleasant and an overcrowded form of tourism. Nevertheless, contemporary mass tourism is a complex phenomenon and different actors within the tourism industry conceptualize it in different ways. In this study, mass tourism is understood to be socially constructed and negotiated through discursive practices. This is a case study that analyses h…
Rethinking Mass Tourism
For decades, mass tourism has been a widely used term in tourism research, and it still has no clearly agreed definition and content. There has been growing interest among scholars to address mass tourism from fresh viewpoints. This article aims to analyse theoretically and reconceptualize the discursive practice of mass tourism as a socially constructed idea and its implications. Deterministic and flexible discourses of defining mass tourism wer…
