Clown politics
Contemporary right-wing populism mixes comic performance with authoritarian and reactionary sentiments in troubling ways, as much recent work has observed. We might thus be said to be living in an era of ‘tragic farce’ in which Marx’s famous distinction between genres of historical action has collapsed. To engage with these questions, this article focuses on the clown as a figure in which aesthetics and politics intersect in crucial ways. Through…
The Howl of the Earth
This paper offers a close reading of “The Geology of Morals,” the third and possibly most important chapter, or plateau, of Deleuze and Guattari’s magnum opus A Thousand Plateaus. I analyse some of the many philosophical and scientific sources informing Deleuze and Guattari’s densely argued text. The authors’ shift of emphasis from the critique of psychoanalysis to a geological or stratigraphic register is emphasized and explained by situating th…
Aporias of Ecological Thought
Debates in ecological social theory are characterised by dualisms of nature and society. The author proposes the notion of 'ecological aporias' to account for these dualisms, focusing on three landmark examples of ecological thought over the past four decades from Niklas Luhmann, Bruno Latour and Jason W. Moore. He shows the persistence in this work of paradoxes and intractable contradictions revolving around the nature/society dualism. Rather th…
The Desert in Modern Literature and Philosophy
Shows how philosophers from Nietzsche to Deleuze have used the figure of the desert to theorise space and place Uses the figure of the desert to provide an aesthetic theory of modernity Rethinks and challenges key assumptions of ecocriticism Offers readings of the most significant literary deserts using an innovative and rigorous theoretical framework Provides an original account of the Anthropocene from a cultural perspective Read an interview b…
Desert Earth
The figure of the desert features extensively throughout the two volumes of Capitalism and Schizophrenia and is a recurring motif in Deleuze's sole-authored works. While recent book-length studies place geophilosophy at the forefront of Deleuze and Guattari's thought ( Flaxman 2012 ; Woodard 2013 ; Gasché 2014 ), the theme of the desert is mentioned in these studies only in passing, if at all. Understanding the role of the desert in the evolution…

Deleuze and the Symptom
The concepts of health, illness and medicine are a persistent and recurring concern in Deleuze’s work, yet the secondary literature shows only a scant interest in the topic, with Daniel W. Smith’s excellent introduction to his English translation of Essays Critical and Clinical (Deleuze 1997) remaining one of the few sustained pieces of commentary on this aspect of Deleuze’s thought. The reasons for this very possibly have to do with the complexi…
The Marx of Anti-Oedipus
The meeting of Deleuze and Guattari in 1969 is generally used to explain how the former's thought became politicised under the influence of the latter. This narrative, however useful it might be in explaining Deleuze's move away from the domain of academic philosophy following the upheavals of May 1968, has had the effect of de-emphasising the conceptual development which occurred between Difference and Repetition and Anti-Oedipus. Worst of all, …
