Romanticising the algorithm: Power dynamics and ideological implications in human–AI collaboration for higher education
This article examines how undergraduate students appropriate generative AI within higher education, focussing on how their practices both reproduce and contest prevailing algorithmic and neoliberal logics. Drawing on 40 reflexive diaries produced by 186 students enrolled in a journalism course, the study employs thematic coding to analyse how AI tools were integrated into collective production processes such as brainstorming, drafting, and editin…
Fashion as temporal struggle: Bourdieu, power, and the politics of in/out
This commentary engages critically with Van de Peer and Laermans’ article by foregrounding the contributions of Pierre Bourdieu to the sociology of fashion. While acknowledging the originality of their transversal approach, the article argues that Bourdieu's conceptual apparatus – particularly concerning temporality, agency, and symbolic power – deserves a more thorough engagement. Rather than treating Bourdieu as a supplementary theorist of stra…
The evolution of a discipline: A transformative chapter in fashion studies
This editorial reflects on the transformative trajectory of fashion studies, highlighting key developments over the past decade. Initially dismissed as a trivial field, fashion studies has evolved into a critical interdisciplinary domain, interrogating fashion’s intersections with social, cultural and economic structures. Through the lens of the International Journal of Fashion Studies , this evolution is examined across thematic trends such as d…
Going pro in the business of influence: Unfolding influencers’ trajectories through influencing capital
This study examines the rise and professionalisation of fashion influencers, focusing on their visibility and legitimacy achieved through professional content production and social media monetisation. It draws on the concept of ‘trajectories’ to capture the dynamic nature of influencers’ professional paths, contrasting traditional notions of ‘career’. The research analyses the resources influencers mobilise and generate to sustain their activitie…
Università italiana, docenti e ChatGPT. La zona grigia tra pratiche lavorative e immaginari
The article aims to analyze the results of an exploratory research study conducted in 2023 with Italian academics (N = 64) regarding their work practices and imaginaries related to artificial intelligence, focusing on ChatGPT. The questionnaire and the interpretation of the results consider two perspectives: a) the culture and everyday life of artificial intelligence and 2) artificial communication, algorithmic thinking, platforms, and work pract…
Two Decades of Fashion Blogging and Influencing: A Critical Overview
Influencers have monopolized media attention in recent years, the result of a long process lasting two decades dating from the rise of blogging at the beginning of the twenty-first century. In this article, I set out the his- torical framework in which the social media practitioners known as fashion bloggers and influencers have emerged and developed as relevant players in the field of fashion. I propose a reading of fashion blogging and influenc…
Got to be real: An investigation into the co-fabrication of authenticity by fashion companies and digital influencers
This article investigates how fashion companies build their relationships with digital influencers (DIs), a new group of cultural intermediaries who are increasingly central to brand communication strategies. Scholars have mostly studied DIs’ role in influencing the market, but largely neglected the process through which they build their work. Through a qualitative inductive research directed at 21 Italian fashion companies, we describe the proce…
Anti-gambling policies: Framing morality policy in Italy
Recent research on morality policy has focused on policy change, morality framing and the presence of favourable cultural opportunity structures (COSs). The resulting literature describing various aspects of morality policy has failed to discuss the impact of multilevel dynamic in this field. This contribution examines gambling policy in Italy, applying a multilevel approach to detect the presence of favourable COSs, and whether policymakers fram…
Sharing economy as an anti-concept
The “sharing economy”, a term often used interchangeably with the “collaborative economy” and “collaborative consumption”, is a recurrent topic both in public and academic debate on new Web-based services characterized by forms of peer-to-peer or business-to-peer sharing. This paper investigates it theoretically as an “anti-concept”, that is, an unnecessary and rationally unusable label forged to replace a concept endowed with greater legitimacy.…
Extreme Losers: On Excess and Profitless Expenditure in Male Gambler Practices
The essay looks at male gambling by investigating it as a form of resistance to the utilitarian values which lie at the base of the market logic. Here the excess is viewed as a central notion in opposition to that of utility. Far from minimising the negative impact of excessive gambling on society and individuals, this contribution attempts to go beyond an analysis based on the categories of pathology and expenditure only. Through excess, the pat…
Meso-celebrities, fashion and the media: How digital influencers struggle for visibility
This article analyses the Italian field of fashion blogging in relation to the theme of celebrity, which is directly linked to the media visibility of bloggers. Relying on the concept of blogging as a social field in which many agents struggle for the symbolic dominance of space, the notions of micro-celebrity and celebrity are discussed. An intermediate category - that of meso-celebrity - is coined to identify a central portion of the field whic…
Stumbling on the Heels of My Blog”: Career, Forms of Capital, and Strategies in the (Sub)Field of Fashion Blogging
In this study I examine fashion blogging as a subfield of the field of fashion media by using a Bourdieusian theoretical framework. After identifying the steps of the “career” of bloggers, my aim is to highlight the cultural, economic, and social resources (forms of capital) that bloggers use to access the field, and the strategies they mobilize to shape their relations with other agents within it. The empirical terrain which is investigated to a…
