Capital and the Family
How are capital and the family interconnected in contemporary capitalism? In this article, we argue that they come together in owning relations. By owning capital across generations, families bridge the temporal gap between the durability of capital and the finite lifespan of private property holders and thus resolve the problem of bona vacantia. We posit that the ownership of capital influences the structure and practices of families. Vice versa…
Marriage: An institution you cannot disparage? Evidence on the marriage norms of entrepreneurs
Entrepreneurship research increasingly acknowledges marriage as an important resource for long-term commitment to entrepreneurial ventures. At the same time, family scholars emphasize the deinstitutionalization of marriage in many countries, meaning that marriage as formalized and long-term companionship has lost importance. We contend that outdated ideological positions in entrepreneurship studies on marriage potentially obscure the more complex…

Market Dependence as a Boundary Construction for Work Solidarity with the Solo Self-employed
As more people work outside standard employment, the foundations of work solidarity are contested. How does work solidarity arise in atypical forms of work that are characterised by flexible, autonomous and self-dependent organisation, such as in solo self-employment? Drawing on a discursive approach to work solidarity, this article emphasises how market dependence can serve as a boundary construction to create work solidarity. Empirically, this …
From Nurturing the Successor to Attracting New Founders: How Firm Platforms Organize a Market for Selling Businesses
Firm platforms organize a market for selling Mittelstand firms in Germany. In doing so they face a challenge: to instill a market frame in a segment of the German economy that is known for its family embedding. This study examines the strategies firm platforms use to reframe ownership transfer from a gift passed on within the family to a commodity traded on a market. Building on a content analysis of the seven largest and most innovative firm pla…
Group conditions for entrepreneurial visions: Role confidence, hierarchical congruences, and the imagining of future in entrepreneurial groups
An essential part of entrepreneurial activity is the drafting and narrating of an entrepreneurial vision. This study is premised on the observation that entrepreneurial groups form an interaction arena for the practice of imagining the future and asks how the content of entrepreneurial visions is shaped by the conditions of the group. Taking an entrepreneurship-as-practice lens, which we enrich with sociological theory on the future (Beckert) and…
Crowd science infused learning: Connecting online teaching and crowd science in the social sciences
In this article, we reflect upon the combination of crowd science and online teaching, which we refer to as Crowd Science infused Learning. We discuss Crowd Science infused Learning's conceptual design and its viability in sociology and related disciplines. For this purpose, our research project ‘Data Traces’ serves as an empirical case. In the project, we developed an online platform that provided a 45-minute teaching unit, training students in …

The crowd in crowdsourcing: Crowdsourcing as a pragmatic research method
Crowdsourcing, as a digital process employed to obtain information, ideas, and solicit contributions of work, creativity, etc., from large online crowds stems from business, yet is increasingly used in research. Engaging with previous literature and a symposium on academic crowdsourcing this study explores the underlying assumptions about crowdsourcing as a potential academic research method and how these affect the knowledge produced. Results id…
Coordination Tasks and Negotiation Modes of Linked Lives in Entrepreneurial Families
The overlap of business and family roles, and how they are linked in entrepreneurial families, requires intergenerational negotiation. Biographical case reconstruction analysis of 32 narrative interviews of 12 German entrepreneurial families explores what coordination tasks need to be resolved and how family members negotiate their interlocking lives. The article finds that entrepreneurial families actively coordinate positions, life phases, and …
