  • Algorithmic responsibility without accountability

Open Access•Cristina Besio, Cornelia Fedtke et al.•ARTICLE•Systems Research and Behavioral…•2025•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 51

Social science research has been concerned for several years with the issue of shifting responsibilities in organisations due to the increased use of data‐intensive algorithms. Much of the research to date has focused on the question of who should be held accountable when ‘algorithmic decisions’ turn out to be discriminatory, erroneous or unfair. From a sociological perspective, it is striking that these debates do not make a clear distinction be…

  • Digital transformation and organizational restlessness

Open Access•Cristina Besio, Marco Jöstingmeier et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sociology•2024•Referencias: 16

In modern society, organizations are expected to be increasingly flexible and adapt to constantly changing environments. While such flexibility is often considered a positive trait of organizations, the risks of continuous organizational change are often overlooked. Against this background, we argue that continuous, multiple and uncoordinated organizational change can lead to a state we define as "organizational restlessness" and a loss of the be…

  • Old and New Organizational Forms in a Complex Society

    Open Access•Cristina Besio, Veronika Tacke•ARTICLE•Critical Sociology•2024•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 36

This contribution demonstrates the potential of Niklas Luhmann's organization theory to enrich current research on organizational phenomena. Although this theory originated more than half a century ago, we show that it is a powerful instrument to describe and understand the role that different old and new forms of organizations play in current crises and transformation processes. Hereby, we stress two combined advantages of the theory: (1) Luhman…

  • Verantwortungsvolle Maschinen ohne Verantwortlichkeit? Datenintensive Algorithmen in Organisationen

Cristina Besio, Cornelia Fedtke et al.•ARTICLE•Soziale Systeme•2022

    Cristina Besio, Uli Meyer•ARTICLE•Soziale Systeme•2022

  • Gesellschaftliche Wirkung organisationaler Re-Kombinationen.

    Cristina Besio, Uli Meyer•ARTICLE•Soziale Welt•2022•Citada por: 2

This monograph showcases some recent developments in the sociology of organizations, mapping out the most productive relationships between current social scientific work on organizations and core theoretical and empirical concerns in the discipline of sociology

  • Effects of project-based research work on the career paths of young academics

Open Access•Maria Norkus, Maria Norkus Maria Norkus et al.•ARTICLE•Work Organisation Labour &…•2016

This article focuses on the career chances and working conditions of early-stage researchers as an important category of knowledge workers within the academic system in Germany. We analyse the consequences of a crucial element of this system: the trend to work on externally-funded short-term research projects. Temporary employment in projects opens up opportunities for self-fulfilment and self-organisation, but also increases the risk of self-exp…

  • Uncertainty and attribution of personal responsibility in organizations

    Cristina Besio•ARTICLE•Soziale Systeme•2015

Modern society complicates the attribution of responsibility to individual actors. However, processes of attributing responsibility remain a frequent occurrence - also in the context of organizations. How can we explain this phenomenon? This contribution endeavors to describe processes of attributing moral responsibility to reveal some of the functions and problems these processes produce and to explain why they assume a new role in modern societ…

  • Innovation und Organisation

Cristina Besio, Robert Jungmann et al.•ARTICLE•Soziale Systeme•2014

Ei…

  • The Implementation of the Quota Requirements of the Directive `Television Without Frontiers

Open Access•Cristina Besio, Ruth Hungerbühler et al.•ARTICLE•International Communication Gazette•2008•Referencias: 3

The television programming and production quotas introduced in 1989 by the European Directive `Television without Frontiers' were intended to improve the European audiovisual industry and to protect European culture. Nearly two decades since the implementation of these regulations, one may ask what effects they have had. This article addresses this question by analysing the challenges entailed in the European quotas for broadcasters from differen…
