Roots and dynamics of Dutch foreign plant-oil demands 1920–2020
Dutch harbours became key notes in European foreign fat supply in the twentieth century. These imports of oils and fats have had significant economic, social and environmental impacts worldwide. Demand for these resources was driven by food industries, intensive livestock farming and fossil fuel mitigation, and linked domestic practices to global supply chains. This paper investigates the development of Dutch imports of oils and fats over the pas…
Rethinking Social Rights as Social Property
Although the transformation of welfare states carries far-reaching implications for property relations, there is an astonishing amnesia regarding property in research concerning the welfare state. To date, the French sociologist Robert Castel is the only thinker to have illuminated the connection between property and social rights: he understands transfer payments and public infrastructures as social property and describes them as rehabilitation …
Neighbourhood Revitalisation and Heritage Conservation through Adaptive Reuse
This contribution discusses experiences of civic initiatives with adaptive reuse in urban and rural settings. The contribution aims at understanding the implications of formal ownership instruments of commoning projects to address social needs and conserve heritage. In particular, we examine cases in which Heritable Building Lease (HBL), Community Land Trusts (CLT), and Community Ownership (CO) have been used as instruments for such commoning pro…
From wastelands to waiting lands
In debates urban wastelands can appear caught between stigmatisation and romanticisation, viewed either as blight or obscure opportunity. How can we conceive of these spaces in a more productive, yet contingent, way? This article examines the political and conceptual meanings of urban voids and explores their significance to understandings of cities and urban development. To emphasise the ways in which voids are mobilised for particular agendas, …
Nature conservation, indigenous rights, and settler colonialism
Payments for ecosystem services (PES) are strongly criticized by political ecology scholars. Predominantly, their critique is rooted in notions of distributive justice, as they focus on the negative impact (e.g. land rights distribution) of PES for indigenous and other local communities. Many liberal supporters of PES do not deny that these problems are real. However, they put more emphasis on procedural justice and claim that PES may trigger an …
