Active labour market policies in emerging adulthood may act as a protective factor against future depressiveness: An analysis of the long-term trajectories of depressive symptoms in the Northern Swedi…
Introduction: Drawing upon the framework of life course epidemiology, this study aligns with research on the mental health consequences of significant social transitions during early adulthood. The focus is on the variation in initial labour market attachment and the development of depressiveness, assuming that a firm attachment is associated with decreasing depressiveness. Methods: = 1,001) took place during their final year of compulsory school…
Psychosocial conditions during school-age as determinants of long-term labour market attachment: A study of the Northern Swedish Cohort from the 1980s to the 2020s
This study contributes to existing knowledge through its novel exploration of labour market attachment and the revelation of the significance of proximal interpersonal relationships in attachment outcomes. Additionally, the study reaffirms the importance of externalizing behaviour, while suggesting that internalized symptoms in adolescence might have a less influential, though not negligible, role. These results underscore the importance of addre…
Alleviating Surgeons’ Stress through Listening to Natural Sounds in a Half-Encapsulated Rest Space after an Operation: A Pilot, Longitudinal Field Study
This risk-free, easy-to-use means of stress alleviation through natural sounds could benefit highly-stressed people working indoors
The relevance of macroeconomic conditions on concurrent and subsequent alcohol use – results from two Northern Swedish cohorts
Background: The aim of this study is to examine the relevance of macroeconomic conditions (boom vs. recession) and own labor market status on alcohol use in youth and midlife.Method: Two Northern Swedish cohorts, born in either 1965 (boom at age 21 years) or 1973 (recession at age 21 years), included all pupils attending the last grade of compulsory school in Luleå, in 1981 (n = 990) or 1989 (n = 686), respectively. Questionnaires were completed …
The diversity of transitions during early adulthood in the Finnish labour market
This study explores young Finns’ transition pathways into education and work over a 9-year period (from the age of 18 to 26), with a special focus on difficulties with labour market attachment. The data were derived from national registers comprising all men (29,383) and women (27,784) born in 1987. Their labour market attachment was investigated using trajectory analysis with four variables (employment, education, unemployment, social security a…
The risk of under‐insurance in the Finnish statutory pension scheme for self‐employed workers: A trajectory analysis
Using unique data on the contribution base, we investigate under‐insurance within the statutory pension scheme for self‐employed workers in Finland. Under‐insurance is defined as the difference between pension‐declared income and tax‐declared income. The trajectory modelling technique applied has allowed us to estimate the levels of under‐insurance for different subgroups and to identify possible explanatory factors. Under‐insurance is found to b…
The effect of partner buffering on the risk of unemployment in Finland
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to outline the study to determine whether the dual earner model better offsets the actual risk of unemployment compared to other household models. Design/methodology/approach The authors linked the partner effect (household type) with macroeconomic institutional settings, such as employment protection, the active labour market policy, economic growth rate and globalisation, to study how these micro- and macro-…
Labour Market Attachment Following Major Workforce Downsizings: A Comparison of Displaced and Retained Workers
In plant downsizings, attention tends to be paid to displaced workers, while the retained are considered 'fortunate survivors'. Exploiting a comprehensive Finnish employee-employer dataset, this study examines both displaced and retained workers and compares their seven-year labour market attachment after downsizing. Advanced statistics, including trajectory analysis, are used to identify groups characterized by 'immediately weakening', 'graduall…
Early Family Relationships Predict Children's Emotion Regulation and Defense Mechanisms
Early family relationships have been suggested to influence the development of children's affect regulation, involving both emotion regulation and defense mechanisms. However, we lack research on the specific family predictors for these two forms of affect regulation, which have been conceptualized to differ in their functions and accessibility to consciousness. Accordingly, we examine how the (a) quality and (b) timing of family relationships du…
Parental academic involvement in adolescence as predictor of mental health trajectories over the life course: A prospective population-based cohort study
Parental involvement in their offspring's studies may buffer against poor mental health in adolescence which may track into adulthood
From childhood socio-economic position to adult educational level – do health behaviours in adolescence matter? A longitudinal study
Both hypotheses fitted the data showing a strong mutual interaction of school achievement and adoption of HCB and HEB in early and late adolescence. Both hypotheses acknowledged the crucial role of family background. The pathway from health behaviours in adolescence to adult education runs through school career. The interplay between behaviours and educational pathways in adolescence is suggested as one of the mechanisms leading to health inequal…
Adolescents' health and health behaviour as predictors of injury death. A prospective cohort follow-up of 652,530 person-years
Health compromising behaviour adopted at adolescence has a clear impact on the risk of injury death in adulthood independent from socioeconomic background. On the other hand, poor health as such is not a significant predictor of injury death. Promotion of healthy lifestyle among adolescents as part of public health programmes would seem an appropriate way to contribute to adolescent injury prevention
