The French Revolution is Not Over: An Introduction
Intellectual History and the Causes of the French Revolution
From the outbreak of the French Revolution in 1789, historians, politicians, and even the interested public believed radical ideas to be at the bottom of this upheaval. Upstaged by social explanations, particularly in the first two-thirds of the twentieth century, intellectual accounts have regained prominence, as recent scholarship has reiterated that ideas mattered. But what ideas? This essay focuses on those ideas that became evident at and ar…
Peter McPhee. Liberty or Death: The French Revolution
Peter McPhee’s Liberty or Death adds to an ongoing tradition of general histories of the revolution. These broad treatments flourish in part because of the central place of the French Revolution in modern history and because of the continued torrent of new scholarship, which creates an opening for new surveys. Some scholars write such surveys for the undergraduate and upper-level class market; others for graduate students; and yet still others fo…
On a Mission: Peter Stearns and the Journal of Social History
Founded in 1967 with social history still in its infancy in the United States, the Journal of Social History quickly emerged as an important home for this emerging field, even beyond North America. At first, with political, intellectual, and diplomatic histories supreme, Peter Stearns created the journal as a beachhead, but it soon came to play a major role and continues to do so to this day. From his position as editor, Stearns wrote over a doze…
Non-violence and the French Revolution: Political Demonstrations in Paris, 1787–1795 . By Micah Alpaugh Stuff and Money in the Time of the French Revolution . By Rebecca L. Spang The Smile Revolution …
Four decades ago when François Furet proclaimed that the French Revolution was over, his was a clarion call that modern politics should no longer dominate its study. Specifically, he blamed Jacobin-inspired scholars for enforcing orthodoxy. But if he wished to remove present politics from revolutionary historiography, his intervention accomplished the opposite. In fact, by emphasizing instead a connection between 1789 and the Terror, Furet and th…
Historians Revisit the Terror--Again
From its inception in 1789, the French Revolution swiftly moved from a democratic phase to domestic conflict, war, and repression, which peaked in intensity in 1793–94. Although the Terror almost immediately drew historians’ interest, it as a subject waned by the mid-1960s. While explaining its ebb and flow from the mid-twentieth century to the present, this essay focuses on the half-dozen syntheses of the Terror, which have appeared since 2000. …

Amalgamating the Social in the French Revolution
The French Revolution has long depended on social factors to explain its causes, course, and consequences. In particular, Marxist explanations held sway throughout the first three-quarters of the twentieth century. In the last twenty years or so, linguistically driven works pushed the social aside and became the leading viewpoint. However, a current wave of scholarship suggests a differing approach in which the social returns but significantly al…

Provincial Politics in the French Revolution: Caen and Limoges, 1789-1794
This book is first and foremost a study of revolutionary politics, of what molded and determined those politics at the local level. More than simply to compare the local politics of two towns, however, my goal has been to establish the links between local and national political actors, between local and national political issues. Although the nature of local politics tells us a great deal about national political divisions, we need to consider so…

Historians have long recognized that the large body of periodical literature surviving from the eighteenth century, along with the smaller amount preserved from the seventeenth century, is an important source of insight into the early development of modern society in the West. Newspapers and other periodicals—magazines, reviews, and a miscellany of other publications difficult to characterize precisely—provided eighteenth-century readers with fun…
