  • Revisiting Naples: Clientelism and organized crime

Felia Allum, Percy Allum•ARTICLE•Journal of Modern Italian Studies•2008•Cited by: 5•References: 10

Naples and the Campania region have always been labelled one of the heartlands of corruption, clientelism and organized crime. All of which polluted the local economy, civil society and politics. The 'tangentopoli' crisis of 1993–94 marked an important turning point: the direct election of Antonio Bassolino as mayor of Naples was intended to introduce a new form of leadership and a rebirth for the city/region, but 12 years on, how much has really…

Percy Allum•ARTICLE•Journal of Modern Italian Studies•2003•Cited by: 4

The article examines town planning in the city of Naples since the war and, in particular, the ambiguous relations between politicians and policy. The focus of the analysis highlights the failure to give effect to the various master plans (PRG) discussed and sometimes adopted by the city authorities. This explains to a large extent the widespread building speculation that occurred in these years. Keywords: Town PlanningPolicyLocal PoliticsBuild…

This article discusses the nature of Italy's major post-war government party, Christian Democracy (recently collapsed, after almost half a century in power), and its local power structures. Its main thesis is that, for a series of historical and socio-economic reasons, it was constituted initially of two types of party - a notables' party in southern Italy and a mass party in northern Italy - held together by generic anti-communism and state patr…
