Analysing the National Security Implications of Soldiers’ Mutinies in Nigeria’s Counterterrorism Operations
Soldiers’ mutinies have undermined Nigeria’s counterterrorism efforts in the Northeast Region, despite repeated military denials of this. Although research on Nigeria’s counterterrorism operations is extensive, studies on the causes (poor welfare, inadequate weapons, sabotage) and effects (low morale, loss of territory, breakdown of command) of these mutinies remain limited. In particular, the implications of mutinies for national security, espec…
Between Rhetoric and Performance: The State and Counterterrorism in Nigeria's Post-2015 Presidential Election
While there are significant volumes of studies on Nigeria's counterterrorism, little or no intellectual attention has focused on the nexus between rhetoric and the performance of the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari on counterterrorism. This paper explores the politicisation of insecurity and the government's counterterrorism efforts. It draws on the performativity thesis and documented field data to make assessments of the administra…

Soft power prophet(s): The unexplored dimension of Nigeria’s religious soft power potential
Despite Nigeria's reservoir of soft power resources, adequate attention has not been given to the growing transnational influence of Nigeria's Pentecostal pastors/prophets. Drawing on the recent emphasis on soft power capabilities of individuals which moves soft power discourse away from focusing strictly on state-centric analysis, this paper examines the soft power attraction of Nigeria's Pentecostal pastors/prophets, especially, the late Prophe…
Multinational Joint Task Force's counterinsurgency in the Lake Chad Basin and the consequences of Chadian exit for the Northeast, Nigeria
The Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), comprising soldiers from the Lake Chad Basin countries (Cameroon, Chad, Niger, Nigeria, and Benin), has been countering insurgency in the region since 2015. Frictional relationships resulting from mutual distrust affected the commitments of MNJTF contributing countries in counterinsurgency operations in Lake Chad. Chad, notably, considered itself an arrowhead in the counterinsurgency due to the laxity o…

Desertification, migration, and herder-farmer conflicts in Nigeria: Rethinking the Ungoverned Spaces Thesis
While previous studies have focused on how political and economic factors fuel herder-farmer conflicts, there is a dearth of knowledge on how desertification-induced migration amidst ungoverned spaces affect herder-farmer conflicts in Nigeria. Using data from qualitative dominant mixed method, this study interrogates how desertification-induced migration and state failure to provide security governance affect herder-farmer conflicts in Nigeria. I…
Pentecostalism, Electoral Prophetism and National Security Challenges in Nigeria
In advanced democracies, professional pollsters forecast electoral outcomes with varying degrees of accuracy. The culture of public opinion polls is not yet fully entrenched in Nigeria due to over-politicization of issues. However, there seems to be a thin line between the spiritual and the temporal, with some religious leaders taking it upon themselves to predict outcomes which are often not achieved. This occurs in a tense environment character…
