  • The Future of Extinction

Open Access•L Christiansen, Steen Ledet Christiansen•ARTICLE•Humanities•2020

In this article, I draw on William S. Burroughs’ The Western Lands to think about what François Laruelle has termed a “generic humanity.” This generic humanity broadens and expands our ethical obligations towards those who have not yet been included in humanity. Burroughs’ emphasis in the novel on flattened time, magic, and death as transformation is used to show how we can make Mankind extinct from our way of thinking. Burroughs’ novel is thus a…

  • Unruly vision, synesthetic space

    L Christiansen, Steen Ledet Christiansen•ARTICLE•The Senses and Society•2020•Cited by: 5•References: 19

In recent years, there has been an increase in using drones outfitted with cameras and unusual lenses to produce music videos. Analyzing Flatbush Zombies featuring Trash Talk’s video “97.92,” this article outlines the contours of this synesthetic space and its position within audiovisual culture. Drone technologies inscribe themselves into the long history of other visual (and sonic) technologies used to expand cinematic forms of expression, and …

  • The place of the cognitive in literary studies

Open Access•Karin Kukkonen, Anežka Kuzmičová et al.•ARTICLE•Cogent Arts and Humanities•2019

The so-called “cognitive turn” lies almost two decades behind us, and a cognitive approach to literary texts, interested in the processes of thought, feeling and imagination evoked and developed by

  • Atmospheres and science fiction

Open Access•L Christiansen, Anežka Kuzmičová•ARTICLE•Cogent Arts and Humanities•2019

This article proposes to read science fiction through the lens of atmosphere. Atmospheres, of course, have gained increased critical interest in recent years, most noticeably in Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht’s monograph Atmosphere, Mood, Stimmung, but also cognitivists like Peter Stockwell has discussed the use of atmosphere in literary studies. By turning to mood and atmosphere as ways of understanding and analyzing how science fiction worlds are realiz…

    L Christiansen•ARTICLE•Cultural Studies•2018

Action movies participate in the administration of fear [Virilio, P., 2012. The administration of fear. Translated by Ames Hodges. Los Angeles, CA: Semiotext(e)], and the networked affects of contemporary warfare [Anderson, B., 2013. Targeting affective life from above: morale and airpower. In: P. Adey, M. Whitehead, and A.J. Williams, eds. From above: war, violence and verticality. London: Hurst & Company]. Through a sensory assault of intense b…

  • Tarja Laine

Open Access•L Christiansen, Steen Ledet Christiansen•ARTICLE•MedieKultur Journal of media and…•2014

Tarja Laine's second book continues her interest in emotional dynamics in fi lms and argues for a synthetic approach, drawing on both sensory and cognitive insights.Sensory theories and theories of emotional engagement consist of what is often referred to as the third wave of fi lm theory.Yet this third wave is in no way homogenous and does not draw on the same critical foundations. On the one hand, we have a mostly phenomenological tradition that…
