  • Truth-telling in settler colonial Australia

Open Access•Oscar Xavier Kee, Yin Paradies et al.•ARTICLE•Settler Colonial Studies•2026

Truth commissions are central to any transitional justice process that seeks to restore a good relationship between the State and the people after periods of human rights violations; but the definition of truth and justice is from a White-normative perspective, which is incompatible with Indigenous understandings of truth and justice. The divide between White-normative and Indigenous understandings of truth and justice leads to an inability or un…

  • Reckonings with truth

    Open Access•Vanessa Barolsky•ARTICLE•Journal of Sociology•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 19

This article analyses grassroots truth-telling in Australia, in the light of the 2017 Uluru Statement's call for a Makarrata Commission to oversee truth-telling and treaty. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities have long called for truth-telling about the colonial past. Numerous community projects have emerged to engage with these historical truths. However, few of these initiatives have been documented. This article analyses a small …

  • Reckoning with truth globally

Open Access•Vanessa Barolsky, Laura Rodriguez Castro et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Sociology•2024•Cited by: 3•References: 63

This Special Issue interrogates the limitations and possibilities of truth within global efforts to address historical injustice. Over the past 30 years truth commissions have become ubiquitous in response to authoritarian regimes and colonial legacies. However, their ability to facilitate meaningful transformation is increasingly contested. In this editorial we explore what a decolonial reckoning, rather than reconciliation, with the past and co…

  • Truth-telling about a settler-colonial legacy

    Open Access•Vanessa Barolsky•ARTICLE•Postcolonial Studies•2023•Cited by: 2

In 2017, the Uluru Statement calling for Voice, Treaty and Truth was released by Australia’s Referendum Council. The Uluru Statement calls for a Makarrata Commission to oversee a process of ‘agreement-making’ and ‘truth-telling’. I argue that it was in the regional dialogues held by the Referendum Council prior to the release of the Uluru Statement that this demand for truth-telling was substantively articulated by dialogue participants. This art…

  • A better life for all', social cohesion and the governance of life in post-apartheid South Africa

    Vanessa Barolsky•ARTICLE•Social Dynamics•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 10

Against the background of rising levels of anxiety around the state of the social fabric in South African society, this paper explores the disjuncture between the post-apartheid state’s policy discourse on social cohesion and the local discourses of South African residents in 24 focus groups held in townships around the country, which reveal significant levels of social fragmentation and intense contestation regarding the new regime of rights. Th…
