The question of the human mortality plateau
The debate about limits to the human life span is often based on outcomes from mortality at the oldest ages among longevity pioneers. To this day, scholars disagree on the existence of a late-life plateau in human mortality. Amid various statistical analys

Gender Differences in Disability and Economic Hardship in Older Europeans
Contribution of chronic conditions to smoking differences in life expectancy with and without disability in Belgium
Background: Smoking is the leading cause of premature mortality and morbidity. This study aimed at assessing the impact of smoking on life expectancy (LE) and LE with (LED) and without disability (DFLE). We further estimated the contribution of disability and mortality and their causes to differences in LED and DFLE by smoking. Methods: Data on disability, chronic conditions, and smoking from 17 148 participants of the 1997, 2001, 2004 Belgian He…
Contribution of chronic conditions to gender disparities in health expectancies in Belgium, 2001, 2004 and 2008
Background: We aimed to investigate the contribution of chronic conditions to gender differences in disability-free life expectancy (DFLE) and life expectancy with disability (LED) in Belgium in 2001, 2004 and 2008. Methods: Data on disability and chronic conditions from participants of the 2001, 2004 and 2008 Health Interview Surveys in Belgium were used to estimate disability prevalence by cause using the attribution method. Disability prevalen…

Economic Hardship and Educational Differentials in Disability in 26 European Countries

Harmonising summary measures of population health using global survey instruments
measures of population health—health expectancies in particular—have become a standard for quantifying and monitoring population health. To date, cross-national comparability of health expectancies is limited, except within the European Union (EU). To advance international comparability, the European Joint Action on Healthy Life Years (JA: EHLEIS) set up an international working group. The working group discussed the conceptual basis of summary m…
Educational differentials in disability vary across and within welfare regimes
BACKGROUND: Social differentials in disability prevalence exist in all European countries, but their scale varies markedly. To improve understanding of this variation, the article focuses on each end of the social gradient. It compares the extent of the higher disability prevalence in low social groups (referred to as disability disadvantage) and of the lower prevalence in high social groups (disability advantage); country-specific advantages/dis…
Comparison of socio-economic indicators explaining inequalities in Healthy Life Years at age 50 in Europe
BACKGROUND: The first estimates of Healthy Life Years at age 50 (HLY50) across the EU25 countries in 2005 showed substantial variation in healthy ageing. We investigate whether factors contributing to HLY50 inequalities have changed between 2005 and 2010. METHODS: HLY50 for each country and year were calculated using Sullivan's method, applying the age-specific prevalence of activity limitation from the European Union Statistics on Income and Liv…
Ageing in the European Union
The mystery of Japan's missing centenarians explained
This report elucidates the issue of Japan's missing centenarians, which was uncovered in 2010. We provide the latest figures from verification efforts, discuss sources of centenarian information in Japan, examine possible causes, and evaluate the effect of the missing centenarians on official statistics. In Japan 234,354 people registered before 1910 remained on the family registers in 2010, without being crossed out. They would have been 100 yea…
Inequalities in health expectancies at older ages in the European Union
BACKGROUND: Life expectancy gaps between Eastern and Western Europe are well reported with even larger variations in healthy life years (HLY). AIMS: To compare European countries with respect to a wide range of health expectancies based on more specific measures that cover the disablement process in order to better understand previous inequalities. METHODS: Health expectancies at age 50 by gender and country using Sullivan's method were calculate…
Occupational inequalities in health expectancies in France in the early 2000s

The compression of deaths above the mode
Kannisto (2001) has shown that as the frequency distribution of ages at death has shifted to the right, the age distribution of deaths above the modal age has become more compressed. In order to further investigate this old-age mortality compression, we adopt the simple logistic model with two parameters, which is known to fit data on old-age mortality well (Thatcher 1999). Based on the model, we show that three key measures of old-age mortality …

Three dimensions of the survival curve
Three dimensions of the survival curve have been developed: (1) “horizontalization,” which corresponds to how long a cohort and how many survivors can live before aging-related deaths significantly decrease the proportion of survivors; (2) “verticalization,” which corresponds to how concentrated aging-related (“normal”) deaths are around the modal age at death (M); and (3) “longevity extension,” which corresponds to how far the highest normal lif…
Increase in common longevity and the compression of mortality
This study shows a strong increase in the modal age at death (M) in Japan over a period of 50 calendar years, accompanied by a clear decrease in the standard deviation of ages at death above M (SD(M+)) until the 1990s for men and the mid-1980s for women. For the most recent periods SD(M+) appears to have stopped decreasing, even though M has continued to increase linearly. This stagnation in SD(M+) has been accompanied by stagnation in q(M). The …
Redefining the Stages of the Epidemiological Transition by a Study of the Dispersion of Life Spans

Social inequalities in disability-free life expectancy in the french male population, 1980–1991
We calculate aggregate indicators of population health for occupational groups to gauge changes in health disparities during the 1980–1991 period. The study is based on the experiences of French adult men in three major occupational classes: managers, manual workers, and an intermediary occupational group. Life table models show that managers have longer life expectancy and dis-abilityfree life expectancy (DFLE) than manual workers, and a shorter…
Examination of the Causes and Mechanisms of the Increase in Disability-Free Life Expectancy
From 1981 to 1991, life expectancy at birth in France increased by 2.5 years. Health survey data show that during this 10-year period, disability-free life expectancy increased significantly by 3.0 years in males and 2.6 years in females. Consequently, the proportion of years lived without disability within life expectancy has increased. For example, in males it increased from 86.4% to 87.5% in this time period. These observations show that, cont…

In 1984, World Health Organisation (WHO) has proposed a demo-epidemiological model which allows the assessment of the possible consequences of the lengthening of life on the level of health. This model is represented in a graphic form by three curves : the observed survival curve, the hypothetical survival curve without chronic diseases and the hypothetical survival curve without disability ; thus, as life expectancy at any age is calculated from…

European Perspectives on Healthy Aging in Women
Using data from the 1994 European Community Household Panel, we compare active life expectancy differentials at age 65 years between women and men in 12 European countries.
