Where are cool and jogging-active spaces? LCZ-contextualized trade-off windows between surface thermal burden and jogging intensity in a high-density city
Competing for a Profit‐Shifting Firm
We investigate tax competition between two asymmetric countries bidding for an MNE subsidiary. Departing from standard zero‐sum models of profit reallocation between hosts, we introduce an “inward shifting” mechanism where profits flow from a high‐tax headquarters country to the host. This expands the host's tax base, strategically incentivizing the small country to adopt lax transfer pricing regulations. In equilibrium, the small country leverag…
Silenced? Does social-media real-name registration policy facilitate firm misconduct? Evidence from greenwashing in China
Removing anonymity in social media may stimulate firm misconduct as it reduces social media’s monitoring effects. This paper employs China’s 2015 social media real-name registration policy as a quasi-natural experiment that requires internet users to register their real ID with the government. Results indicate that the policy caused a robust and economically meaningful increase in corporate greenwashing which is a classical misconduct. Results ar…
Rethinking placemaking through rural tourism in Chengkan Village, China
The conservation and adaptive reuse of traditional villages has become a key policy priority in China, with rural tourism widely promoted as a means to achieve these goals. Yet little attention has been given to how cultural landscapes are represented, reshaped, and inhabited through tourism. This study addresses the gap through a longitudinal case study of Chengkan Village. Drawing on interviews, field observations, planning documents, and histo…

Force of Attraction and Partner Availability in the U.S. Marriage Market
This article develops and applies a stochastic two-sided matching model to analyze marriage patterns in the United States using 1 percent samples from the 2010 and 2019 American Community Survey, accessed via the Integrated Public Use Microdata Series. This approach disentangles two sources of change in marriage patterns over time: individuals’ preferences for partner characteristics (“forces of attraction”) and the numbers and composition of pot…

Why Do Financially Illiterate Students Perceive Lower Education Returns? Evidence From a Survey in Rural China
This paper studies how students' financial literacy affects their perceptions of returns to schooling and consequently their schooling decisions. We first propose a model of human capital accumulation where financially illiterate students exhibit a cognitive bias of "ironing heuristic." With this decision heuristic, students tend to linearize the relationship between educational investments and future earnings, resulting in underestimated returns…
Moving towards gender equality in China
BACKGROUND: Family, schooling, and culture influence attitudes towards gender roles, which life experiences further reinforce. Cross-regional migration is an important life experience that can reshape gender role attitudes. However, little is known about how host-city cultures influence migrant workers' gender role attitudes and the influencing mechanisms. OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the impact of migration experiences on rural migrants' g…

Transport infrastructure investments and competition for FDI
This paper studies how transport infrastructure investments (TIIs) affect a bidding war for a firm between two asymmetric countries within a region in a context of imperfect competition, where TIIs play the role of a global public good, leading to a reduction in the unit trade cost between the two countries. A number of interesting results are derived from the model. In particular, TIIs can intensify fiscal competition between the two countries. …

Does corporate donation lead to more tax aggressiveness
With regard to the supply of public goods, existing literature mainly focuses on the crowding out effect of public provision of public goods on private provision, while the adverse effect has been largely neglected. In this paper, building on the perspective of private provision's impact on public provision, we attempt to investigate the causal effect of corporate donation on firms' tax aggressiveness. We use the IV method to address potential en…
