  • Healthy Food and Nutrition Offerings at Midwestern Food Pantries

Open Access•Joan M Hermsen, Lexi Oetterer et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Applied Social Science•2025

Food pantries differ in terms of their commitment to, capacity for, and practices in support of healthy eating options and nutrition programming for food pantry users. We assess these differences in a sample of 476 food pantries in the Midwestern United States. Using survey data collected in 2021 from food pantry directors, we find high support for offering healthy food options at pantries, although there are some pantry infrastructure and staff …

  • All-cancer incidence and mortality in Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, and their descendants in England and Wales

Open Access•Joseph Harrison, Frank Sullivan et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

Using high quality representative data, we show that lower incidence of cancer and not better survival is the driver of the low cancer mortality previously found. This advantage persists across immigrant generations, but all-cancer mortality following incidence may be elevated for descendants

  • Effect of Free Medicine Distribution on Health Care Costs in Canada Over 3 Years

Open Access•Navindra Persaud, Nav Persaud et al.•ARTICLE•JAMA Health Forum•2023

    ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT02744963

  • The spatial–temporal effect of air pollution on individuals’ reported health and its variation by ethnic groups in the United Kingdom

Open Access•Mary Abed Al Ahad, Urška Demšar et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

Using longitudinal data on individuals' health linked with air pollution data at two geographical scales (local authorities and LSOAs), this study supports the presence of a spatial-temporal association between air pollution and poor self-reported health, which is stronger for ethnic minorities and foreign-born individuals in the UK, partly explained by location-specific differences. Air pollution mitigation is necessary to improve individuals' h…

  • Union formation and fertility amongst immigrants from Pakistan and their descendants in the United Kingdom

    Open Access•Joseph Harrison, Katherine Keenan et al.•ARTICLE•Demographic Research•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 112

Previous work identifies conservative family behaviour amongst Pakistanis in the United Kingdom relative to natives, including earlier marriages, fewer dissolutions, and higher fertility. However, few studies have investigated how fertility and partnership

  • Optimizing the implementation of lung cancer screening in Scotland

Open Access•Debbie Cavers, Mia Nelson et al.•ARTICLE•Health Expectations•2022

INTRODUCTION: Targeted lung cancer screening is effective in reducing lung cancer and all-cause mortality according to major trials in the United Kingdom and Europe. However, the best ways of implementing screening in local communities requires an understanding of the population the programme will serve. We undertook a study to explore the views of those potentially eligible for, and to identify potential barriers and facilitators to taking part …

  • Increasing uptake to a lung cancer screening programme

Open Access•Lynsey Rachael Brown, Frank Sullivan et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

Co-design has provided a fuller understanding of the barriers, facilitators and pathways for the provision of a future lung cancer screening programme, with a focus on the potential of biomarker blood tests for the identification of at-risk individuals. It has also identified possible solutions and future developments to enhance uptake, e.g. Embedding the service in communities, Effective communication, Overcoming barriers with options. Continuin…

  • Methods of connecting primary care patients with community‐based physical activity opportunities

    Open Access•Kathryn B Cunningham, Rayna Rogowsky et al.•ARTICLE•Health & Social Care in the…•2020•References: 3

Deemed a global public health problem by the World Health Organization, physical inactivity is estimated to be responsible for one in six deaths in the United Kingdom (UK) and to cost the nation's economy £7.4 billion per year. A response to the problem receiving increasing attention is connecting primary care patients with community-based physical activity opportunities. We aimed to explore what is known about the effectiveness of different meth…

  • Determinants of motivation to quit in smokers screened for the early detection of lung cancer

Open Access•in collaboration with the ECLS study team, Ben Young et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2018

We observed complex and individualised motivations about smoking following lung cancer screening. To be most effective, smoking cessation support in this context should explore understanding of screening test results and may need to be highly tailored to individual emotional responses to screening

  • The PRECIS-2 tool

Open Access•Kirsty Loudon, Shaun Treweek et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ•2015

PRECIS is a tool to help trialists make design decisions consistent with the intended purpose of their trial. This paper gives guidance on how to use an improved, validated version, PRECIS-2, which has been developed with the help of over 80 international trialists, clinicians, and policymakers. Keeping the original simple wheel format, PRECIS-2 has nine domains—eligibility criteria, recruitment, setting, organisation, flexibility (delivery), fle…

  • Why do women not return family history forms when referred to breast cancer genetics services? A mixed‐method study

    Open Access•Kirstie A Hanning, Michael Steel et al.•ARTICLE•Health Expectations•2015

BACKGROUND: Personal and family data forms, completed by women referred to breast cancer genetics clinics, are valuable tools for verification and extension of family history, crucial steps in accurate risk evaluation. A significant minority of women do not complete and return these forms, despite reminders, even when completion is a pre-requisite for a clinic appointment. OBJECTIVE: To facilitate access of women at increased familial risk of bre…

  • A managed clinical network for cardiac services

    Open Access•Karen E Hamilton, Frank Sullivan et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2005•Cited by: 2•References: 2

The Managed Clinical Network made a difference to ways of working, particularly in breaching traditional boundaries and involving the public, and made modest changes in patient care. However, it required a two-year "set-up" period. Managed clinical networks are complex initiatives with an increasing profile in health care policy. This study suggests that they require energetic leadership and improvements are likely to be slow and incremental

  • Do the British Guidelines for Asthma Management facilitate concordance

Open Access•Karen Steven, Wendy Marsden et al.•ARTICLE•Health Expectations•2004

Background Asthma is an example of a common, chronic illness in which clinicians are encouraged to promote concordance and adhere to guidelines. Some existing research suggests that these aims may be incompatible. Objectives To describe patient goals for life and for asthma management in order to inform concordance with people with asthma. Design A cross‐sectional, qualitative survey. Setting and participants A purposive sample of 47 adults with …
