Participación, Pobreza y Políticas Públicas: 3P que Desafían la Psicología Ambiental Comunitaria (El caso de los Concejos Comunales de Venezuela)
Participation, poverty and public policy are three relevant topics for the state, society and academy, particularly for environmental and community social psychology. Meanings and ways of addressing these topics by the above mentioned sector have varied across time and places. Recent impact of new governance models, such as participative democracy, has provoked changes in public policy modes of influence, as a strategy for poverty reduction. Such…
Vindicating communities in the context of Globalization
El rescate de las comunidades en el marco de la Globalización
The prevalence and increase, specially in recent years, of diverse problems (social, economic environmental) particularly in Latin America have led various sectors to question globalization as a convenient model for the development of these countries. In this article we present and analyse, in general terms, some notions, characteristics and implications of globalization, from two antagonistic versions: The first of them refers to the notion of g…
Promoting sustainable communities: Theory, research, and action
Sustainable development (SD) is a concept adopted in recent years in order to orient societies' development so as to ensure the durability of systems and create a promising future for the coming generations. SD criteria are of particular importance for urban life, given the complexity and range of the problems with which the great cities struggle. Slums, known as 'barrios' in Venezuela, have become a prominent feature of all the world's cities, a…

The social construction of becoming homeless in such situations was studied through in-depth interviews with 27 adults who lost their homes due to a landslide. The main topics brought up by the interviewees included the meaning of their homes, the impact of having lost them, the impac…
Community and sense of community: The case of an urban barrio in Caracas
This paper presents a review of the concepts of “community” and “sense of community.” To discuss the concept of “community,” reference is made to the different definitions provided in the literature analyzing and describing their components and determining their adequacy and relevance to the theories of Community Social Psychology. Based upon the work of McMillan (1976) and McMillan and Chavis (1986) the authors analyze the concept and definition…
Paradigms of community social psychology in six Latin American nations
In this article, we present the general theoretical orientations (concepts, theories, and paradigms) as well as methodologies and techniques which have guided the work of community social psychologists in six Latin American countries: Brazil, Chile, Colombia, México, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela. The analysis is based on the review of the state of the art of community social psychology in those countries (Sánchez & Wiesenfeld, 1991; Wiesenfeld & Sá…
The concept of “we”: A community social psychology myth
This paper questions the conceptions of community found in the literature on community psychology, as well as those employed in everyday life, which reflect the notion of community as a “we”. This notion is understood as a compact and homogenous group, assuming that their members feel, think, and behave in similar and predictable ways, as corresponds to their belonging to the community. It implies a set of processes such as membership, inclusion,…
