  • Antonio Gramsci e a Revolução Russa: Uma Reconsideração (1917-1935)

  • The Cambridge History of the Second World War: Volume 2, Politics and Ideology

Open Access•Evan Mawdsley, Richard J B Bosworth et al.•BOOK•Cambridge History of the Second…•2015

War is often described as an extension of politics by violent means. With contributions from twenty-eight eminent historians, Volume 2 of The Cambridge History of the Second World War examines the relationship between ideology and politics in the war's origins, dynamics and consequences. Part I examines the ideologies of the combatants and shows how the war can be understood as a struggle of words, ideas and values with the rival powers expressin…

  • Stalin and the European Communists after World War Two (1943-1948)

    Silvio Pon, Pon et al.•ARTICLE•Past & Present•2011

Two basic differences in the Soviet attitude to Europe can be discerned in the years following the Second World War as compared with the aftermath of the First. On the one hand, although conflicts between imperialist interests, state rivalries over hegemony, economic crises and social turmoil were expected to reappear, it was no longer possible to see revolution in its original sense as the answer. On the other, Soviet Russia was no longer margin…

  • Concettualizzare l'89: La Prospettiva Storica

    Silvio Pon, Silvio Pons•ARTICLE•PASSATO E PRESENTE•2010

Conceptualizing 1989 in historical terms means above all explaining the peaceful fall of the European communist states in a long-term international perspective. The author’s goal is to assess the weight and periodization of the major factors in our understanding of how communism lost its hegemonic challenge to the West in the cold war. Historians have underestimated the legacy of sovietization and the split of the communist movement in the 1950s …

  • Western Communists, Mikhail Gorbachev and the 1989 Revolutions

    Open Access•Silvio Pon, Silvio Pons•ARTICLE•Contemporary European History•2009•References: 2

Western communists reflected two opposing responses to the final crisis of communism that had matured over time. The French communists represented a conservative response increasingly hostile to Gorbachev's perestroika, while the Italians were supporters of a reformist response in tune with his call for change. Thus Gorbachev was the chief reference, positive or negative, against which Western communists measured their own politics and identity. …

  • Reinterpreting the End of the Cold War: Issues, Interpretations, Periodizations

Emily O Goldman, Federico Romero et al.•BOOK•Reinterpreting the End of the…•2004

The history of the Cold War is being re-written according to the newly available sources. But first and foremost it needs to be re-conceptualized and framed within the broader historical context that transformed the Cold War from the 1960s onwards, altered the very dynamics of bipolarism, and eventually brought it to its end. The long duration and the unexpectedly peaceful ending of the Cold War call for new views that transcend the established p…

  • Stalin, Togliatti, and the Origins of the Cold War in Europe

    Silvio Pon•ARTICLE•Journal of Cold War Studies•2001•Cited by: 7•References: 5

Soviet policy toward the Italian Communist Party (PCI) from 1943 to 1948 exemplified Josif Stalin's complicated relationship with the West European Communist parties and Western Europe in general. For a considerable while, Stalin insisted that the PCI follow a policy of moderation. Palmiro Togliatti, the leader of the PCI, heeded Stalin's orders and tried to ensure that the Italian Communists pursued a policy of national unity and avoided conflic…
