  • Agua e historia del paisaje en la Corona de Aragón: Distintas aproximaciones

    Open Access•Jordi Bolòs•ARTICLE•Agua y Territorio / Water and…•2023

This study aims to assess the importance of irrigation water in the territories of the Crown of Aragon and show the changes that the use of water has caused in the landscape over the last two thousand years. The transformations that occurred during the Middle Ages are mainly analyzed, pointing out the importance of relating these changes with the mutations that occurred in society. In a special way, the different approaches that have existed when…

  • Agua e historia del paisaje en Cataluña: Novedades y resiliencias a lo largo de la Edad Media. El ejemplo de Lleida

    Open Access•Jordi Bolòs•ARTICLE•Agua y Territorio / Water and…•2023

  • Agricultural terraces in the Mediterranean: Medieval intensification revealed by OSL profiling and dating

Open Access•Sam Turner, Timothy Kinnaird et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2021•Cited by: 30•References: 37

The history of agricultural terraces remains poorly understood due to problems in dating their construction and use. This has hampered broader research on their significance, limiting knowledge of past agricultural practices and the long-term investment choices of rural communities. The authors apply OSL profiling and dating to the sediments associated with agricultural terraces across the Mediterranean region to date their construction and use. …

  • Changes and continuities in a Mediterranean landscape: A new interdisciplinary approach to understanding historic character in western Catalonia

    Open Access•Sam Turner, Jordi Bolòs et al.•ARTICLE•Landscape Research•2018•Cited by: 4•References: 33

To understand why historic landscapes changed in the past researchers need to identify when and where changes took place, but in rural landscapes, the origins and development of many historic elements including field systems, roads, terraces and other earthworks remain poorly understood. This paper outlines a practical interdisciplinary method using GIS-based historic landscape characterisation (HLC) to integrate data from different sources and m…

  • Optically-stimulated luminescence profiling and dating of historic agricultural terraces in Catalonia (Spain)

Open Access•Timothy Kinnaird, Jordi Bolòs et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2016•Cited by: 23•References: 3

Dating agricultural terraces is a notoriously difficult problem for archaeologists. The frequent occurrence of residual material in terrace soils and the potential for post-depositional disturbance mean that conventional artefactual and lab-based dating methods often provide unreliable dates. In this paper we present a new technique using luminescence field profiling coupled with OSL dating to produce complete (relative) sequences of dates for se…

  • Changes and survival: The territory of Lleida (Catalonia) after the twelfth-century conquest

    Jordi Bolòs•ARTICLE•Journal of Medieval History•2001

The city of Lleida and its surrounding territory were conquered by the counts of Barcelona and Urgell in late 1149, ending over four centuries of Muslim rule. This territory formed the western frontier of Catalonia with Aragon and Lleida, and would be one of the major cities of what was known as ‘New Catalonia’, the lands conquered to the south and west of the Carolingian ‘Spanish March’ during the twelfth century. The article describes how patte…

  • Landscape and society in the county of Besalú (Catalonia) in the Middle Ages

    Jordi Bolòs•ARTICLE•Landscape History•1999

The county of Besalú (Catalonia, Spain) in A.D. 785 started to became dependent on the Frankish kings. The territory was divided into ‘valleys’ and other districts. The main type of settlement during the ninth and tenth centuries was half-dispersed village (villares). After the year 1000, the search for protection against feudal violence brought the creation of many sacrariae, the sacred space surrounding the church, where houses were built. In s…
