Introduction
Expanding Career Diversity
Over the last few issues, the Bulletin has been brining you pieces to help scholars rethink professionalization and academic training in the study of religion. In this issue, William Brown, Senior Technical Editor at Quanta Technology, LLC offers some much-needed insight on this front. He contends that once academic units recognize and normalize nonacademic career pursuits, then these units can put into play proven practices to empower future rel…
How to activate nonprofit beneficiaries for community resilience? Examining the role of risk perception and evaluation of nonprofit services on prosocial behavior in the context of natural hazards
Nonprofit organizations serve an essential role in response to natural hazards by delivering services to affected communities and those in need. However, little is known about the drivers of nonprofit-resident engagement during and aftermath of emergencies. Utilizing survey data collected in Austin, Texas, we address this gap by analyzing how beneficiaries of nonprofit services become donors and/or volunteers. Specifically, this study empirically…
Human Paleodemography and Paleoecology of the North Pacific Rim from the Mid to Late Holocene
Using 14 proxy human population time series from around the North Pacific (Alaska, Hokkaido and the Kuril Islands), we evaluate the possibility that the North Pacific climate and marine ecosystem includes a millennial-scale regime shift cycle affecting subsistence and migration. We develop both visual and statistical methods for addressing questions about relative population growth and movement in the past. We introduce and explore the use of a T…
Biogeography and adaptation in the Kuril Islands, Northeast Asia
The Circumpolar North is generally recognized as a challenging environment to inhabit and yet, we know relatively little about how people managed their welfare in these places. Here, we add to the understanding of maritime hunter-gatherers in the subarctic North Pacific through a comparative approach that synthesizes biogeographic and archaeological data from the Kuril Islands. We conclude that our faunal, ceramic and lithic evidence support expe…
The toxic politicising of the National Minimum Wage
Purpose After 15 years of successful operation, the British Low Pay Commission’s management of the National Minimum Wage was threatened in 2015 by the government’s introduction the National Living Wage. The purpose of this paper is to consider the underlying principles of previous minimum wage fixing, and the additional thinking of the Living Wage Foundation and the review of the issue by the Resolution Foundation. Design/methodology/approach The…
Mid to Late Holocene Population Trends, Culture Change and Marine Resource Intensification in Western Alaska
The goal of this project is to understand the influence of population size on human adaptation processes and culture change during the Mid to Late Holocene in Western Alaska. We use a database of 1180 radiocarbon dates ranging from 6000 to 1000 14C years BP and drawn from 805 archaeological components in Alaska to construct a proxy record for relative change in regional and Alaskan metapopulation sizes over time. Our analysis indicates that a maj…

Dimensions of Capacity in Nonprofit Human Service Organizations
The purpose of this paper is to present and develop a firmer grasp of the underlying dimensions of organizational capacity in nonprofit human service organizations. The paper draws on the resource-based view of the organization (Barney et al. in Journal of Management 37:1299, 2011; Wernerfelt in Strategic Management Journal 5:171, 1984), which recognizes that organizational attributes and capabilities facilitate performance. Interviews were condu…
Determinants of Nonprofit Sector Density
Why do nonprofit organizations exist? From an economic perspective, a number of major theories have been proposed to explain their existence. However, when exploring determinants of nonprofit sector density, one needs to take into account that demand and supply factors operate simultaneously and that it is difficult to separate them. By using a stakeholder approach, we develop a more integrative framework for understanding variations in nonprofit…

The Process of Fixing the British National Minimum Wage, 1997–2007
The British National Minimum Wage was introduced in 1999 under the guidance of a Low Pay Commission constructed on a basis of ‘social partnership’. The article analyses its conduct over its first 10 years from diary data. Key challenges were for it to be independent of government, to have its advice accepted by government and to maintain internal unanimity. The changing internal dynamics of the Commission, and its major negotiations over the leve…
The operation of the Low Pay Commission
The paper provides an account of the working of the Low Pay Commission that was established to advise on the introduction of a statutory National Minimum Wage for the UK. It discusses the way in which the Commission was constituted and the consultation procedures and research methods it developed over its first four years. An account is provided of the principles the Commission developed and of the problems that had to be overcome in delivering w…
The Changing Nature of the Employment Contract
This paper analyzes the practical form that employment contracts take in terms of their incomplete and multilayered nature. It argues that the content of the contract is highly dependent upon the contextual power relationships. These are then analyzed in terms of the substantial changes that are occurring in the structure and conduct of collective bargaining and its economic and legal context. It is argued that the consequence is a greatly increa…

The Next 200 Years
In this work the authors, with assistance of the staff of the Hudson Institute, confront the issue of the second half of the twentieth century; whether technological and economic growth tends to destroy mankind or to improve the prospects for peace and prosperity. The population explosion, coupled with economic growth, could prove catastrophic within a century, or so say the prophets of doom; therefore, economic growth must be severely limited. M…
