  • The Bible in the Reformation

    Open Access•Roland H Bainton•CHAPTER•The Cambridge History of the Bible•1963

The reformers dethroned the pope and enthroned the Bible. This is the common assertion; but when so stated it is not valid, because a book cannot replace a man. A book has to be interpreted. This was the main reason why authority had come to be ascribed to the pope in faith and morals. Catholics argued that if there were no infallible interpreter, there could be no infallible revelation. Scripture at many points is not clear, and when a differenc…

Attention will first be focussed on the theories and factors affecting persecution and tolerance on the part of both Catholics and Protestants. Then the administrative aspects of the subject will be considered alike from the broader standpoint of the structure of the church and of the state and from the more specific an…

    Open Access•Roland H Bainton•ARTICLE•Church History•1932•Cited by: 1•References: 1

The parable of the tares is the proof pàssage for religious liberty. Sinite utraque crescere (Matthew 13, 30) is the counterpart of compelle intrare (Luke 14, 23). The apostles of liberty repeat the text with monotonous iteration, although there is an occasional variety in the emphasis. Some stress the rationalistic argument: we do not know enough to separate the tares from the wheat. Others emphasize the eschatological approach: we can afford to…

  • The Immoralities of the Patriarchs according to the Exegesis of the Late Middle Ages and of the Reformation

    Open Access•Roland H Bainton•ARTICLE•Harvard Theological Review•1930

The Old Testament has always been something of an embarrassment to the Christian church. The book was Scripture and its heroes were to be taken as examples. Nevertheless there was much in their conduct which ran counter to the prevailing Christian ethics. A problem thus arose both in exegesis and in ethics. Were the patriarchs to be justified? Should they be imitated? Marcion evaded the difficulty by simply rejecting the Old Testament, pointing o…

  • Servetus and the Genevan Libertines

    Open Access•Roland H Bainton•ARTICLE•Church History•1936

The defenders of John Calvin have sought to excuse his share in the execution of Servetus by resorting to the type of apologetic employed by Catholics in defense of the Inquisition. The victims, we are told, were politically and socially subversive and would have been suppressed in any age. In the case of Servetus this charge cannot be substantiated from his writings, since he did not reject the oath, nor the authority of the magistrate, neither …

  • New Documents on Early Protestant Rationalism

    Open Access•Roland H Bainton•ARTICLE•Church History•1938

The period of the Reformation is one in which the editing and publication of new documents may be expected to necessitate a periodic revision of the general works. In a sense this is true of every period, but the unpublished sources for the age of the New Testament are slight and not often does the investigator turn up a Didache or the Odes of Solomon. In the Reformation period, however, discoveries are frequent and critical editions incomplete f…

  • Classical and Biblical Scholarship in the Age of the Renaissance and Reformation

    Open Access•Dean P Lockwood, Dean Lockwood et al.•ARTICLE•Church History•1941

Humanists and reformers in the age of the Renaissance and Reformation were concerned for the revival of antiquity both classical and Biblical. Some stressed one and some the other and some like Erasmus were interested in both. Because of the close relation of the two fields, we have brought together into one chapter two essays dealing first with the classical and then with the Biblical scholarship of our period
