Theodosius' Horse
The second general council of Ephesus was convened on August 8, 449, and adjourned some fourteen days later by the legates of Theodosius II, who promptly confirmed the council's canons and decrees. It had been as regular, or irregular, as Nicea I or Ephesus I had been, and far more general than the Constantinopolitan synod of 381. Its chief importance lay in registering another splendid victory for the Alexandrines. The "school" of Antioch was sh…
Toward A Postliberal Hermeneutics
“The aim of a postliberal hermeneutics is to reposition Holy Scripture as a unique linguistic medium of God's self-communication to the human family. Its primary task is to re-present the Bible as the human medium of a divine revelation that has endured and will endure in and through the cultural metamorphoses that succeed each other as history unfolds.”
John Wesley and Authority
John Wesley
“Wesley can be read, and usually has been read, without the broad and intricate tapestry of his sources unfolded as a background for interpretation. This was part of the price he paid for self-divestiture of his theological apparatus. Even so, it is just as this background is recovered and reevaluated that Wesley emerges as a more interesting and impressive theologian than his stereotypes have presented—precisely because he was a folktheologian.”
Karl Menninger and the Dimensions of Sin
The New Iconoclasm and the Integrity of the Faith
“Our main contention here is that the Christian problematic is an entity, that it has a history, that its continuity consists more decisively in perduring frameworks of interrogation than in definitive answers designed to exhaust or conclude reflection—and that the process of development is very far from finished. ... If the hard core questions focus on God and man and Jesus Christ, surely it is significant that, although the church has achieved …

The "Platonism" of Clement of Alexandria
Origen and the Regulae Fidei
It is certainly no compliment nowadays to call a man a "speculative theologian." It was even less so in the early centuries of the Christian era. For "speculative theology" is that kind of religious thought which is relatively indifferent to the realm of history and human events and which proposes postulates and principles which are regarded as a priori, having no necessary connection with history. This viewpoint, reflected in Marcion and the Gno…
