The Seven Odes: The First Chapter in Arabic Literature
These seven poems, translated by A. J. Arberry in 1957, are the most famous survivors of a vast mass of poetry produced in the Arabian Desert in the sixth century. Arberry’s introduction explains to the reader what was known about the poems and how they came to be preserved and distributed over time. The epilogue particularly interrogates the authenticity of the poems and tracks how they have been transmitted over time. This work will be of inter…
Revelation and Reason in Islam
Originally published in 1957. The Scholastic Problem was the focus of much debate in Islam for some centuries before it became the chief crux of learned discussion in medieval Christianity. When originally published this volume was the first survey of the subject to appear in English. It reviews the conflict within Islam between Revelation and Reason and examines the attempts made by theology, philosophy, mysticism and authoritarianism to resolve…

A Sufi Martyr: The Apologia of Ain al-Qudat al-Hamadhani
Originally published in 1969. This volume was composed by an eminent Sufi mystic whilst in prison in Baghdad, awaiting execution, in a vain attempt to overthrow his sentence; he was put to death in AD 1311 at the age of 33. This apologia is a document of great poignancy, composed in most elegant Arabic and translated with the customary skill and elegance for which A J Arberry became so well-known

Plato's 'testament to Aristotle
Naṣīr al-Dīn Ṭūsī concluded his celebrated Akhlāq-i Nāṣirī with a string of aphorisms purporting to be 'a chapter from the utterances of Plato of profit to the generality of men: namely, the testament that he gave to his pupil Aristotle'. In his recent admirable translation, Professor G. M. Wickens comments that 'the aphorisms in this Section are of course not necessarily regarded as coming from one Platonic corpus: even Ṭūsī uses the term mansūb…
Two Rare Manuscripts
TWO RARE MANUSCRIPTS This paper consists of brief notes, it is hoped useful, on the contents of two rare manuscripts in the Chester Beatty Library, Dublin. 1 An entry in Hajji Khalifa runs- Neither this work, nor its author, is mentioned in Brockelmann or, seemingly, elsewhere: the Majnaa ` al aqivdl _ fi al-amthil by Muhammad b. "Abd al-Rahman b. Abi"1-Baqd' 'Abd Allah b. al- Husain al-'Ukbarl. However, a copy, albeit sadly defective, has turned…

The Vita of Ahmad-I Jām
The admirable dissertation on the biography of the Persian mystic and wonder-worker Aḥmad-i Jām by Dr. Heshmat Moayyed has now been followed by an edition of the chief text furnishing the basis for the biography. The learned editor knew of only one complete manuscript of this work, contained in MS Nafid Pasha 339, together with a fragment in Berlin Oct. 3784. The purpose of this paper is to bring to notice the existence of a second complete copy,…

Bistamiana
In his interesting and provocative bookHindu and Muslim mysticism(Athlone Press, 1960), Professor R. C. Zaehner has discussed at length the part which lie believes Abū Yazīd al-Bistāmī played in introducing Vedāntin ideas into Muslim mysticism. In this paper it is proposed to re-examine some of the crucial texts upon which this theory has been based

Orient Pearls at Random Strung
It is scarcely an exaggeration to say, that of the various important contributions made by Sir William Jones to the initiation and development of Persian studies in Europe, none was more felicitous, or more far-reaching in its consequences, than his early labours with the lyrics of Ḥāfiẓ; and of these labours, none bore sweeter fruit than his making of the immortal "Shīrāzī Turk" into A Persian Song
The Nicomachean Ethics in Arabic
The most exciting experience I had during my visit to Morocco in the winter of 1951-52a visit made possible by the generosity of the Eockefeller Trust was the discovery, in the famous Qarawūyūn Library in Fez, of a manuscript containing one half, the second half, of an Arabic translation of the Nicomachean Ethics. The shortness of my stay in that ancient and fascinating Moorish city, and the disabling indisposition that befell me there, made it im…

The Miracle of the Pearls
JALĀL AL-DĪN RŪMĪ in Maihnawi, ii, 3478 sqq., recounts a story of a saint J falsely accused of theft, and of the miraculous manner in which he cleared himself. R. A. Nicholson in his annotation to the passage (vol. vii, p. 359) comments: " Saints accused of theft, who produce miraculous proof of their innocence, appear in many legends related by Moslem hagiographers
Hand-List of Islamic Manuscripts acquired by the India Office Library, 1936–8
This manuscript is written in the rather inelegant “Bihari” hand, which C. Stewart quite properly described as “a branch of the Cufick”. The scribe has used a curious colour-scheme for each page, writing line 1 in blue, line 2 in red, lines 3–6 in black, line 7 in red, line 8 in blue, line 9 in red, lines 10–13 in black, line 14 in red, and line 15 in blue: the garish effect is further accentuated by the use of gilt ornaments to mark the verses, …
Khargūshī's Manual of Ṣūfism
Through the courtesy of the authorities of the Preussische Staatsbibliothek I have had the opportunity of reading in the India Office Library the apparently unique copy of Abū Sa'd 'Abd al-Malik b. Muhammad b. Ibrāhīm al-Wā'iz al-Khargūshī's manual of Sūfism entitled Tahdhīb al-asrār. Khargūshī, who is otherwise known for his voluminous biography of the Prophet and a treatise on the interpretation of dreams, died at Nīshāpūr in 406/1015 or 4Q7/10…
Junayd
Professor Louis Massignon, the value of whose contributions to the study of Sufism cannot be overestimated, gives a short but penetrating account of the doctrines of Junayd in his Essai sur les Origines du Lexique Technique de la Mystique Musulmane . This account is preceded by an analysis of the contents of the manuscript of Junayd's opuscula which is preserved at Istanbul. In his Recueil de Textes Inédits Massignon gives extracts of this manusc…
Did Sulamī Plagiarize Sarrāj
Sulamī's tractate on the Malāmatīs ( Risālat al-Malāmatīya ), as preserved in the Berlin manuscript, has been fully and scientifically analysed and described by Professor E. Hartmann in Der Islam , vol. viii, pp. 157–203. There remains nothing to be added to the conclusions reached there. It is, however, to be remarked that Hartmann's article takes no account of the Cairo manuscript of the tract: this, indeed, could hardly have been available at …

Ḥāfiẓ Ibrāhīm and Shauqi
In the summer of 1933, within the short space of two months, Egypt, and with her the whole Islamic world, was twice plunged into deep mourning, by the deaths of two men who, widely divergent in circumstances and character though they were, were in their generation the greatest and the most universally esteemed of Arabic poets. In their own country they had won titles which well indicate the appreciation, even the affection which they enjoyed: Ḥāf…
The Book of the Cure of Souls
In a former number of this journal I published a specimen translation of one of the Rasā'il of Junayd, as an announcement of my intention to make that famous personage the subject of a monograph. It will be useful at this stage to print the text and translation of what is one of the most interesting of the little treatises preserved in the Istanbul manuscript, both because of its contents, and also for the reason that it is the only work of Junay…

A Bisṭāmī-legend
Brockelmann, G.A.L. Erster Supplementband, p. 353, mentions a Kitāb Masā'il al-ruhbān , ascribed to the famous Ṣūfī Abū Yazīd al-Bisṭāmī, of which a copy is preserved in the Āṭafīya Library in Hyderabad. (Two other copies of the same work, one in Hyderabad and one at Istanbul, are recorded ibid. Nachträge, p. 954.) Through the kindness of Dr. Stapleton I have obtained a copy of the Hyderabad manuscript (described in vol. i, p. 388, of the Āṣafīya…

New Light on Sir William Jones
In a footnote to page 1083 of K. C. Balderston's Thraliana (Oxford, 1942) we read Mrs. Thrale's opinion of our only full-length biography of Sir William Jones (1746-1794), that written by his friend Sir John Shore (later Lord Teign-mouth) and prefixed to the definitive edition of the great scholar's published works: "This Fashion of publishing Lives & Remains is a very amusing Fashion-& Sir William JOne's is the least entertaining among them all.…

Notes on the Mahāsin al-majālis of Ibn al-'Arif
The Mahasin al-majalis of Ibn al-'Arif (†536/1141) is a Sufi treatise of minor dimensions and inconsiderable importance, one of a multitude of such summaries that bridge the gap between the classical works of Kalabadhi, Qushairi, and Makki, and the phenomenal productivity of Ibn al-'Arabi. For all that, the essay (for it is little more) is not without interest; it is allusive and elliptical in style, thus affording material for commentators; and …

New Materials on the Tabaqāt al-shu'arā' of al-Jumahī
IIT is well known that the Ṱabaqāt al-shu'arā' of Muḥammad b. Sallāam al-Jumahi is one of our most important source-books for the history of Arabic poetry and poetic theory; it is equally well known that the text as at present available is both deficient, because of lacunae in the manuscripts hitherto discovered and used, and otherwise unsatisfactory, on account of inadequate editing. Despite the very numerous emendations to Joseph Hell's edition…

The Biography of Shaikh Abū Isḥᾱq Al-Kāzarūnī
by An excellent edition of the Firdaus al-1111frshidïya fi asrar al-samadlya, a biography of the famous Sufi Abu Ishaq Ibrahim b. Shahriyar al-Kazaruni (352-426/963-1033) by Mahmud b. cuthmdn, was published in 1948 at Leipzig by Fritz Meier of Basle 1. The interest of this 511-page text i; extremely varied. First, it is an inflated Persian translation of an Arabic original by Abu Bakr Muhammad b. cabd al-Karim b. call b. Sacd al- Khatib (d. 502/1…

A Sufi Tract
A hlwardt describes in his Berlin catalogue a Ṣūfī tract entitledby him kitāb al-asfār , which he attributes to the wellknown Quṭb al-Dīn al-Jīlī (d. 832/1428). Vollers, who found a second copy of the same work at Leipzig, but there entitled (as it proves, more correctly) al-isfār 'an natā'ij al-asfār , follows Ahlwardt's lead in naming al-Jīlī as the author. These facts have naturally resulted in Brockelmann including the book in the list of al-…

New Materials on the Tabaqāt al-shu‘arā’ of al-Jumahi
II In a former article (BSOAS xiii, pp. 7–22) a collation was offered of the Chester Beatty 4/10th century manuscript of al-Jumahl's Tabaqāt al-shu‘arā’ as compared with J. Hell's edition. In the following pages we have indicated or transcribed the passages contained in the Chester Beatty manuscript which are omitted in Hell's text and the derivative Cairo edition
The Teachers of Shihāb al-Dīn 'Umar al-Suhrawardi
We are informed by Ibn al-'Imād that Shihāb al-Dīn 'Umar b. 'Abd Allāh al-Suhrawardī (d. 632/1234), the celebrated Ṣūfi and founder of the Suhrawardīya Order, "heard Traditions from a number (of scholars)", and that he wrote "a Mashyakha in an attractive section (fijuz'inlaṭtīf)". This Mashyakha was known to Ḥājjī Khalīfa,4 but no copy is noted by Brockelmann. Now it is always interesting to have the names of the teachers of famous men, more espe…
