Hittite mi-e-nu-us: Humans as ‘meek’ or ‘lesser’
A recent article posits Hittite mi-e-nu- as ‘male’, hapax (KBo 3.28 II 16) also ‘human being’, with abundant cognates all the way to English ‘man’, with strained and forced recastings of mi-e-nu- ’soft, mild’ in all other passages as ‘male’. Here crucial KBo 3.28 II 14-16 is reamended and retranslated, implicitly declining the article’s assumptions and conclusions, affirming the vocable involved as formulaic of ‘human frailty’ in binary contrast …

Entia non multiplicanda: The case of Hittite suwaru
Hittite suwaru is usually taken as two unrelated homophones, an adjective-adverb ‘full(y)’ and an obscure noun denoting a ritually used vegetal substance. Author has since 1981 argued for unitary suwaru ‘heavy’ cognate with Lithuanian svarùs. All occurrences are explained by a proto-meaning ‘heavy, dense, solid’ in antonymy to ‘fluid, liquid’. Communis opinio is a needless breach of Occamic principle

Thoughts on a New Volume of a Hittite Dictionary
Professor Jaan Puhvel's Hittite Etymological Dictionary is a primary tool not only for Indo-Europeanists, but for all who seek to interpret Hittite texts. In the absence of a complete up-to-date philological dictionary his four published volumes serve the philologian, and not merely the historical linguist. Nor does one need to agree with all his interpretations in order to appreciate the skill and industry that has allowed him, working alone and…
On the origin of Gothic ulbandus 'camel'
Great are the merits of Bojan Čop in Hittite lexicography and etymology. Glan cing merely at volume 3 of the Hittite Etymological Dictionary, the latest to leave my workshop, his ideas have either provided the etyma or pointed the way to the interpre tation of such important items as halkuessar, halluwa-, halzai-, hattalkesna-, hazzila-, huek- (both verbs!), and hu( wa)nhuessar. May the small token of homage that follows be worthy of his endeav…

Hittite Etymological Dictionary
The HittiteEtymological Dictionary is a comprehensive compendium of the vocabulary of Hittite, one of the great languages of the Ancient Near East, and of paramount importance for comparative Indo-European studies. Since the start of publication, as evidenced by frequency of reference and quotation, this work has become an important tool for study and research in Hittite, Ancient Anatolian, and Indo-European linguistics

The mythical element in estonian poetry
Whoever these days plants the word or any of its derivatives into a serious scholarly context is either speaking loosely or asking for trouble.1 my own instance years of preoccupation with myth and mythology have endowed me with a certain set of scholarly stratagems, a few sectarian beliefs complete with animosities towards clashing viewpoints, but mainly with a lot of uncertainty in the face of Claude Levi-Strauss's rhetorical query, In order to…
Indo-European Negative Composition
The functional history of the IE negative prefix, the variants of which we conveniently designate by their central form * -, is an integral part of the history of IE composition. A classification of IE compounds, based on historical rather than logical considerations, would include (1) old types, generally declining during the historical period of IE—bahuvrīhis and synthetic compounds (verbale Rektionskomposita), and (2) distinctly younger types—…
Laryngeals and the Indo-European Desiderative
This is an attempt to suggest briefly a systematic approach to a number of desiderative or future formations in various IE languages. Taking laryngeals into consideration, I hope to show their possible inclusion under a single formula. No exhaustive study of all variants or subtypes is intended, and no attempt is made to trace the working of analogy which was certainly involved in formations of this kind. The main object is, however, to disqualif…

This paper is intended as a short linguistic contribution to the study of an important feature of Indo-European religious history: the sacrifice of the horse. There exists a copious and valuable bibliography on the subject, and I shall refrain from needless repetition of the materials and conclusions presented there. Only features of immediate importance for my comparison will be explicitly mentioned

The Indo-European and Indo-Aryan Plough: A Linguistic Study of Technological Diffusion
linguistics, many Indo-Europeanists of the past have been aware of the importance of gauging the cultural implications of their work and have tried to fit their findings into a wider framework of scholarly endeavor. Yet concrete collaboration with other historical disciplines has been notoriously sporadic. Many results of Indo-European studies have remained hidden in specialized sources, and the forbidding technicalities of the field have effecti…
