Based on analyses of multi-perspective data generated from a small participatory and exploratory pilot study called Diverse Dads, this article considers how service engagement with minoritised fathers might be addressed in contexts of family and youth support. Semi-structured qualitative interviews and focus groups, complemented by a small survey, were conducted by beneficiaries and employees of a specialist charity supporting young fathers, with…

Aging, Nostalgia and Older Punk Women’s Fandom
Despite their continued engagement as audience throughout their lives, there is some suggestion that ageing, or older, fans have been at large omitted from fan studies (Middlemost, 2022). This does seem to be shifting, however, and there is a growing body of fandom scholarship concerning ageing fans. Indeed, in the context of punk, there has been a growing recognition of the continued significance of punk to older participants and fans (e.g. Ande…
Dadzine: Zine making with young fathers as a participatory and DIY approach to research
This article consider how zine making might be understood as a participatory and DIY approach to research through a focus on zine making workshops with young fathers. Drawing upon Fletcher's conceptualisation of ‘zine ethos’, zines’ DIY ethic, their democratic and participatory ideal and their transformative potential will each be considered reflexively, highlighting some of the ways these might be enacted through zine making in the context of re…
Enhancing the participation of young and minoritised fathers in peer research: An intersectional reflexive analysis of methods and ethics
This article presents an intersectional, reflexive analysis of the research process, methods and ethical considerations involved in a community-based participatory study aimed at increasing and improving the participation of young and minoritised fathers, both in support settings and in research. Conducted by a peer research team comprising beneficiaries and a young male employee of a specialist support charity for young fathers, the substantive …

Rebelling in different ways: Older punk women, employment and ‘being/doing’ punk
How do older women negotiate employment and the workplace alongside being and ‘doing’ punk? This article takes this question as its focus, exploring three key areas that a sample of older punk women raised in regard to relationships between punk identification and work – dress, work/life balance and punk values. Drawing upon qualitative data with 22 older punk women, this article will argue the need to understand continued punk affiliation ‘post-…
Oh sorry, I’ve muted you!’: Issues of connection and connectivity in qualitative (longitudinal) research with young fathers and family support professionals
The COVID-19 crisis has placed unique restrictions on social researchers in terms of how they conduct their research. It has also created opportunities for adaptation and critical reflection on methodological practice. This article considers how the unanticipated use of remote qualitative methods impacted processes of research connection and connectivity in qualitative (longitudinal) research. The reflections are based on fieldwork conducted for …
Punk is just a state of mind: Exploring what punk means to older punk women
What does punk mean to older punk women? And how are such understandings interwoven with experiences of ageing and gender? The complexity in defining punk has been noted and it has been suggested that this complexity in part results from punk's dislike of being labelled/categorised. Drawing upon interviews with 22 self-identifying older punk women, this article considers how they conceived punk as 'a state of mind', exploring the four shared punk…
