Cognitive Constructivism
Cognitive constructivism is a set of theories about the mental processes necessary for transforming experience, including of language, into memory, knowledge, and thought for further understanding. This entry reviews the variations on this idea that have risen to prominence in the past century, its foundation in epistemology, developmental psychology, and cognitive psychology, and current extensions in neuroscience and social psychology.
Legislating Phonics: Settled Science or Political Polemics
In this commentary, we identify a phonics-first ideology and its polemical distortions of research and science to promote legislation that constrains and diminishes the teaching of reading. We affirm our own, and a majority of reading professionals’, commitment to teaching phonics. However, we argue that phonics instruction is more effective when embedded in a more comprehensive program of literacy instruction that accommodates students’ individu…
Language’s vanishing act in early literacy education
Current conversations about children’s literacy have focused on the need for more phonics and decoding instruction and have sidelined the importance of children’s language development, argues George Hruby. Language development involves more than the ability to decode written language. The ability to understand the meaning of those words is also important, and poor outcomes on reading assessments are not necessarily evidence of poor decoding skill…

Three requirements for justifying an educational neuroscience
Background. Over the past quarter century, efforts to bridge between research in the neurosciences and research, theory, and practice in education have grown from a mere hope to noteworthy scholarly sophistication. Many dedicated educational researchers have developed the secondary expertise in the necessary neurosciences and related fields to generate both empirical research and theoretical syntheses of noteworthy promise. Nonetheless, thoughtfu…

Neuroscience and Reading: A Review for Reading Education Researchers
In this review, we lay the groundwork for an interdisciplinary conversation between literacy education research and relevant neuroscience research. We review recent neuroscience research on correlates of proposed cognitive subprocesses in text decoding and reading comprehension and analyze some of the methodological and conceptual challenges of bridging neuroscience and literacy education research. We note that much more research on decoding proc…

Sociological, Postmodern, and New Realism Perspectives in Social Constructionism: Implications for Literacy Research
S In this article, I attempt an historical definition of social constructionism, a review of its conceptual bases, and an exploration of its epistemological implications. I suggest a history for social constructionism comprised of three paradigmatically distinct waves. The first of these is sociological and empirical in nature, the second, psychological and postmodern, and the third is developmental and tied to what I here term the new realisms. …
Mentoring and Reporting Research: A Concern for Aesthetics
S Mentoring and reporting research: A concern for aesthetics In this article we present the results of two studies on the mentoring of teacher educators in literacy education, and model alternative ways of representing and evaluating research data. The first study is based on a survey of North American teacher educators and their beliefs about how they were mentored as students and how they in turn mentor their graduate advisees. The data from th…
