  • The relationship between ecology and economy in German public opinion, 1984-2019

    Johanna Hartmann, Peter Preisendörfer•ARTICLE•Environmental Politics•2024•Cited by: 4•References: 39

Based on data from the German Socio-Economic Panel for 1984–2019, this article investigates how changes in environmental concern are associated with changes in general and personal economic conditions. It examines the hypothesis of a trade-off between ecology and economy, i.e., that public concern about the environment increases under favorable economic circumstances, but erodes during unfavorable ones. On the aggregate level, trend analyses with…

  • Vegetarians in Germany

Johanna Hartmann, Jörg Hartmann et al.•ARTICLE•Soziale Welt•2024•Cited by: 1

Using data from the German Socio-Economic Panel, this article examines (1) the prevalence of vegetarians in Germany, (2) their social profile, and (3) dynamic features of a vegetarian diet and short-term effects on subjective health. As in many other Western countries, the prevalence of vegetarians and vegans in Germany is on an upward trend. In the period 2016-2020, about 7 percent of the Germans declared themselves as vegetarians (including veg…

  • Environmental Inequality in Four European Cities: A Study Combining Household Survey and Geo-Referenced Data

Open Access•A Diekmann, Heidi Bruderer Enzler et al.•ARTICLE•European Sociological Review•2023•Cited by: 5•References: 43

Combining individual-level survey data and geo-referenced administrative noise data for four European cities (Bern, Zurich, Hanover, and Mainz; n = 7,450), we test the social gradient hypothesis, which states that exposure to residential noise is higher for households in a lower socioeconomic position (measured by income and migration background). In addition, we introduce and test the ‘environmental shielding hypothesis’, which states that, give…

  • Ecological Problems

    Open Access•Peter Preisendörfer, A Diekmann•OTHER•The Blackwell Encyclopedia of…•2022

Although human beings have overused natural resources throughout history, today's ecological problems are relatively recent phenomena. In addition to local environmental risks (such as noise and air pollution in metropolitan areas), global ecological problems (such as climate change and loss of biodiversity) in particular are urgent societal and political issues. This entry portrays the three areas of research in which environmental sociologists …

  • Pathways to Environmental Inequality: How Urban Traffic Noise Annoyance Varies across Socioeconomic Subgroups

Open Access•Peter Preisendörfer, Heidi Bruderer Enzler et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

The article investigates how socioeconomic background affects noise annoyance caused by residential road traffic in urban areas. It is argued that the effects of socioeconomic variables (migration background, education, and income) on noise annoyance tend to be underestimated because these effects are mainly indirect. We specify three indirect pathways. (1) A "noise exposure path" assumes that less privileged households are exposed to a higher le…

  • Development and Structure of Environmental Worries in Germany 1984–2019

    Johanna Hartmann, Peter Preisendörfer•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Soziologie•2021•Cited by: 5•References: 5

Referring to a survey question in the German socio-economic panel, which measures worries about protecting the environment, the article looks at the development of environmental worries in Germany for the timespan 1984–2019. The analyses mainly have descriptive character. We explore several expectations and assumptions discussed in historical accounts of the environmental movement in Germany and in empirical studies on environmental attitudes and…

  • Road Traffic and Aircraft Noise as Drivers of Environmental Protest

Open Access•Peter Preisendörfer, Lucie Herold et al.•ARTICLE•KZfSS Kölner Zeitschrift für…•2020•References: 46

This article investigates whether and to what extent unfavorable local environmental conditions furnish an important motivator for environmental protest. We do so using individual-level data on objective and subjectively perceived residential road traffic and aircraft noise pollution, pertaining to the cities of Mainz (Germany) and Zurich (Switzerland). By referring to fine-grained noise data, we are able to test the predictive power of grievance…

    Peter Preisendörfer, Felix Wolter•ARTICLE•Public Opinion Quarterly•2014•Cited by: 13•References: 13

Based on two individual validation studies employing face-to-face interviews and a mail survey, this article investigates factors influencing the probability that respondents truthfully admit to having been convicted of a criminal offense. Overall, 63 percent of the 495 respondents stuck to the truth in the survey settings. The mail survey elicited significantly more truthful responses (67 percent) than the face-to-face survey (58 percent). Femal…

    Open Access•Felix Wolter, Peter Preisendörfer•ARTICLE•Sociological Methods & Research•2013•Cited by: 10•References: 41

This article is an empirical contribution to the evaluation of the randomized response technique (RRT), a prominent procedure to elicit more valid responses to sensitive questions in surveys. Based on individual validation data, we focus on two questions: First, does the RRT lead to higher prevalence estimates of sensitive behavior than direct questioning (DQ)? Second, are there differences in the effects of determinants of misreporting according…

  • Business Start-ups and Their Prospects of Success in South African Townships

Peter Preisendörfer, Ansgar Bitz et al.•ARTICLE•Society in Transition•2012

There is consensus within South African society that black entrepreneurship needs to become a more widespread phenomenon. To achieve this aim, it may be helpful to know more about existing black entrepreneurial ventures. Mainly based on a survey of 90 entrepreneurs in a South African township, this article investigates the questions: What characterises black township entrepreneurs? Into what businesses do they venture? And, most importantly, are …

  • To Pay or Not to Pay: Competing Theories to Explain Individuals’ Willingness to Pay for Public Environmental Goods

Open Access•Ulf Liebe, Peter Preisendörfer et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Behavior•2011

Several theories have been proposed in an attempt to explain individuals’ willingness to pay (WTP) for public environmental goods. While most studies only take into account a single theory, this article discusses competing theories. These include, in addition to a basic economic model, the theory of public goods, Ajzen’s theory of planned behavior, and Schwartz’s norm-activation model. Empirical results are based on a contingent valuation study o…

  • Ecological Problems

    Open Access•Peter Preisendörfer, A Diekmann•OTHER•The Blackwell Encyclopedia of…•2007

They started with the period of industrialization in the first half of the nineteenth century, and had their real takeoff after World War II. Serious warnings about i…

    Open Access•A Diekmann, Peter Preisendörfer•ARTICLE•Rationality and Society•2003•Cited by: 59•References: 15

The low-cost hypothesis predicts that the strength of effects of environmental concern on environmental behavior diminishes with increasing behavioral costs. Thus, environmental concern influences environmental behavior primarily in situations and under conditions connected with low costs and little inconvenience for individual actors. In a first step, we develop and specify this hypothesis. Referring to two procedures, we then test it on the bas…
