Associations Between Vocational Interests and Personality “Beyond” the Big-Five
This investigation explores the relationships between vocational interests and personality dimensions suggested to be "beyond" the Big Five or Five Factor Model. Participants (653 adults; 125 men and 528 women, with a mean age of 40.57 years, SD = 16.61, range 18-92) provided data on the 10 personality dimensions of the Supernumerary Personality Inventory (SPI; Paunonen, 2002), along with the 34 scales (27 work interests and seven work style pref…

The Validation of Brass's Model Life Table System
The closeness-of-fit of two-parameter Brass model life-tables to English life-tables is examined. This is done for various life-table functions and various criteria of best fit. Reproductions of computer output give full details of the fits for typical cases from the large selection of cases examined. It was found that the equations to be solved to find the best fit were intractable and the paper gives a simple method of finding an approximate so…

The reduction of errors in census populations for statistically underdeveloped countries
The population data of statistically under-developed countries are usually subject to many substantial errors. Techniques are required to detect and, by adjustment, to reduce these errors. In the past, much of this work has been of an ad hoc nature. This present study attempts to contribute to the building up of a general methodology for dealing with these problems. Each technique for detecting error is paralleled by techniques for reducing the e…

A note on the estimation of mortality and other population characteristics given deaths by age
Various writers have attempted to estimate mortality when the only data are the number of deaths in age groups, by cumulating the deaths from the oldest group backwards to estimate the life table survivorship, implying the assumption of a stationary population. This note considers the more general treatment when the population is merely assumed stable. The possibility of utilising some additional data is considered, notably the annual rate of pop…

An examination of generation fertility in England and Wales
Generation reproduction rates for England and Wales, similar to the conventional net reproduction rate but based on the mortality and fertility experienced by a group of women born in the same period, are examined for women born in periods from 1841 to 1931. The fertility achievement of each generation is related in a simple manner to what is effectively the proportion of women marrying and the ages at which they married. This shows quantitativel…
