The classical historian J. B. Bury (1861–1927) was the author of a history of Greece which was a standard textbook for over a century. He also wrote on the later history of the Roman empire, and, in this 1912 work, examines the Byzantine empire in the ninth century. The book is a continuation of his two-volume History of the Later Roman Empire of 1889, which covers the period from 395 to 800 (and is also reissued in this series), and reflects Bur…
A History of the Later Roman Empire: From Arcadius to Irene (395 A.D. to 800 A.D)
The classical historian J. B. Bury (1861–1927) was the author of a history of Greece which was a standard textbook for over a century. He also wrote on later periods, and, in this two-volume work of 1889, examines Byzantine history from 395 to 800. Arguing for the underlying continuity of the Roman empire from the time of Augustus until 1453, Bury nevertheless begins his account in the year in which, on the death of Theodosius I, the empire was d…

The Provincial List of Verona
1. The exact measure of the originality of Diocletian's statesmanship has not yet been taken. ‘Like Augustus,’ said Gibbon, ‘Diocletian may be considered the founder of a new empire’ and these words express the accepted view. In the whole work of pulling the Empire together, which went on from A.D. 270 to 330, the three outstanding actors were Aurelian, Diocletian, and Constantine, and the part played by Aurelian was indispensable for the restitu…

Note on Marathon
Of the four great battles of the Persian Wars, Marathon is the only one in which a visit to the scene suggests no new problem. It is simple to reconstruct Thermopylæ on paper, but a survey of the spot disconcerts all one's calculations, owing to the changes wrought by the advance of the land upon the sea. The view of the straits of Salamis insists upon questions of orientation which hardly arise in studying the descriptions of Æschylus and Herodo…

The Campaign of Artemisium and Thermopylæ
Sailing in a coasting steamer from Athens to Volo, the traveller passes by the region of land and sea in which the first great scene of the second Persian War was enacted. He enters the Malian Gulf and discerns Thermopylæ in the distance; then he sails through the channel between the Achaian and north Eubœan shores, and as he turns into the Pagasæan basin seeks Aphetæ somewhere on the right, while the shore of Artemisium behind him stretches away…

Note on the Metre of the Inscriptions in Popular Greek
The inscriptions in popular Greek on A and B are highly interesting as the earliest examples of the metrical cries of the Factions of the Hippodrome. Hitherto the earliest known example dated from about half a century later, in A.D. 561 (see Theophanes, ed. De Boor, 236). Then we have several acclamations in the record of A.D. 602. Phocas was greeted by the chant:— ὕπαγε, μάθε τὴν κατάστασιν, ‘Away, understand the situation, ὁ Μαυρίκιος οὐκ ἀπέθα…
