European wives and local concubines
Though the officers and crews of the British ‘country’ ships that operated in association with the English East India Company in the waters of the Malay Archipelago, the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea were all men, there are occasional references to women on board. These women fall into two categories: European wives and local concubines. This article provides examples of these elusive women, examines the reasons for their presence on board…
The Cinderella of academia
Academic research is increasingly driven by research assessment exercises (in the UK, by the Research Excellence Framework, REF). These aim to compare outputs of researchers in each university with those elsewhere, but evaluation efforts have suffered from widespread criticism. The status of pedagogic research in higher education (HE) – once described as the ‘Cinderella’ of academia, but now an increasing part of university research activity – ha…
Is students’ energy literacy related to their university’s position in a sustainability ranking
University rankings are increasingly important internationally, and in the UK include a sustainability ‘Green League’. However, there is little evidence about experiences of studying in ‘sustainable universities’. We report an empirical study at five universities in varied positions in the Green League, exploring students’ energy literacy, environmental attitudes and perceptions of their institution’s energy-saving efforts. Although the link to e…
Different Perspectives on the Resistance of a Malay State Mempawah 1787–1808
A variety of sources may be consulted to examine a period of changing political and economic status in the west Borneo state of Mempawah between 1787 and 1808. These sources include traditional Malay histories, 19th-century Dutch accounts of events, 18th-century Malay letters and recent post-independence local histories. They reveal a diversity of perspectives on the events taking place and different interpretations of the personalities involved.…
Why Did Syarif Kassim Kill Captain Sadler at Mempawah in 1795
The English country trader Thomas Sadler disappeared while trading at the West Borneo port of Mempawah in 1795. Events surrounding this incident are described and the role of the ruler of Mempawah, Sayid Kassim, examined. The domestic, political and economic conditions of Mempawah are of critical importance in any interpretation of events. Contemporary and later accounts which refer to Sadler's death are analysed, and what is a relatively minor i…
The "Negative" Assimilation of Immigrants
The authors address whether "negative" assimilation among immigrants living in the United States occurs if skills are highly transferable internationally. They outline the conditions for negative assimilation in the context of the traditional immigration assimilation model, in which negative assimilation arises not from a deterioration of skills but from a decline in the wages afforded by skills coincident with the duration of residence. The auth…
English Country Traders and Their Relations with Malay Rulers in the Late Eighteenth Century
Through their contacts within the region, 'English country traders' operating in the Malay Archipelago between 1750 and 1820 played as important a role in the accumulation of knowledge as did East India Company officials. At its most basic level, their need for contact with the Malays involved the obtaining of provisions: food, water and wood. Trade contacts required a more sophisticated knowledge of Malay protocol and an ability to speak Malay. …
Values and Political Change in Postcommunist Europe
