  • Racially Charged Cookies and White Scholarships

    David R Dietrich•ARTICLE•Sociological Focus•2015•Cited by: 4•References: 11

Between 2001 and 2012, students at colleges throughout the United States protested affirmative action policies using various tactics, most notably anti-affirmative action “bake sales,” where the price of the goods was based on the race of the purchaser: white males were charged the most; blacks and Latinos, the least. Other means of protest included “whites-only” or equal opportunity scholarships, an “equal opportunity carnival,” and other satiri…

  • Rebellious Conservatives

  • Avatars of Whiteness

    Open Access•David R Dietrich•ARTICLE•Sociological Inquiry•2013•Cited by: 11•References: 11

Video games are an enormous segment of popular media today, comparable to television and movies. Moreover, video games represent a new form of media distinguished from previous forms due to the interactive element, where game players have the ability to change and influence the game world. This paper contributes to the study of race and popular media by examining how race is presented in role-playing video games through the feature of avatar crea…

  • The Specter of Racism in the 2005-6 Immigration Debate

    Open Access•David R Dietrich•ARTICLE•Critical Sociology•2012•Cited by: 5•References: 60

In the heated debate regarding 'illegal immigration' in the US, arguments and accusations have abounded regarding economics, citizenship, criminality, and culture, but race has remained conspicuously sidelined in public discussion. I argue that race is in fact central to the debate on immigration, both by those opposed to any legalization of undocumented workers in the US and those who favor a temporary worker ('work visa') program. In this artic…

  • The Sweet Enchantment of Color-Blind Racism in Obamerica

    Open Access•Eduardo Bonilla-Silva, David R Dietrich et al.•ARTICLE•The Annals of the American…•2011•Cited by: 101•References: 36

It has become accepted dogma among whites in the United States that race is no longer a central factor determining the life chances of Americans. In this article, the authors counter this myth by describing how the ideology of color-blind racism works to defend and justify the contemporary racial order. The authors illustrate three basic frames of this ideology, namely, abstract liberalism, cultural racism, and minimization of racism. The authors…

  • Dietrich Object Relations and Object Representations Scale

    John H Porcerelli, David R Dietrich•ARTICLE•Psychoanalytic Psychology•1994

This study introduces a relatively new psychoanalytic object relations scale and assesses convergent and discriminant validity and factor structure. The scale was applied to Thematic Apperception Test data. One hundred and two psychiatric subjects and 48 nonpsychiatric volunteers were included in the study. Factor analysis revealed one structural factor and one content factor. Convergent validity was supported through correlations between the fac…

  • The effects of social interaction on group idea generation

Gerry Philipsen, Anthony Mulac et al.•ARTICLE•Communication Monographs•1979•Cited by: 1

The literature on small group problem solving provides strong support for the proposition that social interaction has a detrimental effect on idea generation by group members. The present investigation, like previous research, found that “real” groups vocalized fewer total ideas and fewer good ideas when they were required to “think out loud” than did individuals formed into “nominal” groups. However, when idea generation was measured by written …
