    William R Brown•ARTICLE•Communication Monographs•1986•Cited by: 5•References: 6

Relating rhetoric to power, this essay offers a view of power as communication medium, i.e., communication through power. Logically prior, however, is power through communication by which the rules for power are rhetorically derived. Case studies show (1) a conception of rhetoric‐as‐power being complementary to rhetoric‐as‐epistemic; (2) the development of the power medium as a cultural code dependent on hierarchical interdependency; and (3) the …

  • Progress in Communication as a Social Science

William R Brown, Mark Jeffery Schaefermeyer•ARTICLE•Annals of the International…•1980•References: 4

The issue is raised in relation to recent work by K. E. Boulding and E. O. Wilson and is refined by reference to their complementary views on the nature o…

  • Ideology as communication process

    William R Brown•ARTICLE•Quarterly Journal of Speech•1978•Cited by: 4•References: 12

Defined as any symbolic construction of the world in whose superordinate “name” human beings can comprehensively order their experience and subsume their specific activities, ideologizing is presented as the function of innate intra‐ and interpersonal categorizing of experience. Ideologies are seen to flourish in open systems and to decline in closed ones. Classical conceptions of science illustrate the process, to the end that an autonomous scie…
