The Raging Male – Contextualizing explicit Masculinity in Upper Mesopotamian early Holocene Iconography
This article attempts to interpret the phallocentric artworks known from Early Holocene sites, such as Göbekli Tepe, Karahantepe, and Sayburç, in the Harran plain (Şanlıurfa, southwest Türkiye), as possible relics of rituals centered on male-coded rites of passage from youth to adulthood. The absence of female elements together with the explicit exposure of male sexuality is compared to contemporary tribal initiation rites in the frame of cultura…
Explaining differences in decision-relevant educational knowledge between parents with and without an immigrant background in Germany
Although extant research persistently highlights the importance of information for educational decision-making, better understanding the existence of, and the underlying reasons for, informational differences between immigrant and non-immigrant parents is important. This study examines the differences in the level of information between immigrant and non-immigrant parents of third graders just before they make probably their most important educat…
Are They Still Aiming High? The Development of Educational Aspirations of Lower Secondary School Students With Immigrant Backgrounds in Germany
Although research indicates that students with immigrant backgrounds often have higher educational aspirations than students without immigrant backgrounds at the same performance level, little is known about the longitudinal development of this difference in aspirations. This article analyzes how idealistic and realistic educational aspirations from Grade 5 until Grade 9 in Germany develop for students from various migrant groups, compared with t…

The first casting mould for a ‘Syrian Bottle’ from Lipnik, Bulgaria
The following article presents the first mould ever discovered for casting a so-called “Syrian Bottle”, a distinctive vessel type that originated in Mesopotamia around the mid 3rd millennium BC and soon after spread to Anatolia, the Aegean and Southeast Europe, as imports and local derivatives. A few examples were made from precious metals and lead, the most notable one being a golden globular bottle, part of “Priam’s” Treasure A” from Early Bron…
Social Influence or Rational Choice? Two Models and Their Contribution to Explaining Class Differentials in Student Educational Aspirations
Both the Wisconsin model of status attainment (WIM) and rational choice theory (RCT) indicate that social class differentials in student educational aspirations are partially determined by academic performance. Conditional on performance, the WIM predicts that social influence mechanisms explain the remaining class differentials, whereas RCT maintains that rational calculus factors provide the explanation. Both theories have rarely been compared …
The Early Bronze Age figurine from Hasanoğlan, central Turkey
The following article discusses the archaeometrical dimension of a well-known Early Bronze Age metal figurine from Hasanoğlan, Turkey, on permanent display in the Anatolian Civilisations Museum in Ankara. The transfer of the object to a new display case allowed for an examination with a portable x-ray fluorescence (P-XRF) device in order to reveal the chemical composition of the statuette and its attached ornaments. The figurine was confirmed to …

Early Bronze Age metalwork in Central Anatolia – An archaeometric view from the hamlet

Jahrtausend v. Chr. datierten Verwahrfundes von Arslantepe…

The Metal Tablet from Boğazköy-Hattuša
Sacred Landscapes in Anatolia and Neighboring Regions
The ritual dimension of land use in both prehistoric and historic societies is a flourishing research issue examined by a growing number of archaeologists, historians, philologists, and anthropologists today. Anatolia, because of the time depth of its human settlement and its geographical as well as cultural diversity, offers a great potential for such studies. The chronological span of these papers stretches from the enigmatic world of Chalcolit…
Anatolia and the Balkans, Once Again – Ring‐shaped Idols From Western Asia and a Critical Reassessment of Some ‘Early Bronze Age’ Items From İki̇ztepe, Turkey
The ring‐shaped idol pendant, a distinctive type of Chalcolithic ritual (?) jewellery, is discussed with regard to its chronology in the Balkans in light of its occasional appearance in Asia Minor. Known from domestic contexts, funerals and hoards (?), none of the so far documented Anatolian pendants (clearly another aspect testifying to the well‐known Anatolian–Balkan connections in the fourth millennium BC) can be dated later than the Late Chal…
Anatolia as a bridge from north to south? Recent research in the Hatti heartland
This paper aims to reappraise and evaluate central Anatolian connections with the Black Sea region and the Caucasus focusing mainly on the third millennium BC. In its first part, a ceremonial item, the knobbed or ‘mushroom’ macehead, in its various appearances, is discussed in order to reconstruct a possible pattern of circulation and exchange of shapes and values over a longer period of time in the regions of Anatolia, southeast Europe and the C…
