Dwight Zakus, Peter Smolianov et al.•BOOK•Sport Development in the United…•2014

The development of both elite, high performance sport and mass participation, grassroots-level sport are central concerns for governments and sports governing bodies. This important new study is the first to closely examine the challenges and opportunities for sports development in the United States, a global sporting giant with a unique, market-driven sporting landscape. Presenting an innovative model of integrated sports development, the book e…

  • How Green Will My (Lea) Valley Be? Olympic Aspirations

Peter Horton, Dwight H Zakus et al.•ARTICLE•The International Journal of the…•2010•Cited by: 2•References: 4

Much debate surrounds the nature and reality of the legacy left to host cities after they hold an Olympic or a Winter Olympic Games. We argue and provide evidence that the debate is more about sustainability. The sustainability of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as an organization and of the games that deliver the aspirations and goals of the Olympic movement are central issues in this debate. The IOC identifies its aspirations and goal…

  • Coming in from the margins

    James Skinner, Dwight H Zakus et al.•ARTICLE•Soccer and Society•2008•Cited by: 6•References: 1

Soccer in Australia exists at the margin of the professional sport landscape, although it enjoys popularity at the development levels. This historic position is the result of many social and political forces. With four football codes operating in Australia, amongst other elite and professional sport teams and leagues, soccer occupied a troubled position. The sustenance and growth of the sport emanates from a strong ethnic, immigrant basis of socc…

  • Ethics of Drug Testing in Sport-An Invasion of Privacy Justified

David Cruise Malloy, Dwight H Zakus et al.•ARTICLE•Sport Education and Society•2002•Cited by: 1

Though agencies, such as the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport and the Australian Sports Drug Agency, argue that much effort is being directed toward educating athletes about the virtues of fair play, the risks of drug use, and the ethics of cheating, the primary focus of government led initiatives is catching cheaters through testing. As a result, a decade following the inaugural Canadian Inquiry random drug testing is an accepted part of the …

  • Production, Consumption, and Sport

    Open Access•Dwight H Zakus, Dwight Zakus•ARTICLE•International Review for the…•1995•Cited by: 1•References: 7

Marx wrote, in the introduction to the Grundrisse, that there is a dialectical relationship (a unity) between the productive and consumptive moments of human labour. That is, human labour involves both production and consumption at the same time. Each type of activity reproduces the other. If one holds this premise as correct, then it would prove interesting and informative to determine whether athletes are aware or consider that they consume the…

  • The International Olympic Committee

Dwight H Zakus, Dwight Zakus•ARTICLE•Sociology of Sport Journal•1992•Cited by: 2

Many IOC actions have led to results that could be described as tragedy and farce. By comparing the presidency of Pierre de Coubertin with that of Avery Brundage, and comparing the decisions made in the denial of Jim Thorpe’s victories with the suspension of Karl Schranz, it is possible to see examples of tragedy and farce in the history of the Olympic movement. Further, it becomes possible to see how some of these actions and decisions have beco…
