Theodore Dreiser and the Anti-Progressive Drive
Theodore Dreiser appears, when noticed, as author of classic novels, Sister Carrie being most often cited as surviving publishers' abuse. Dreiser himself is perceived as a pioneer: awkward in prose, but honest in reporting his own and American life. Evidence in his papers and elsewhere reveals a secret life opposed to the Progressivism of his time, and requiring revaluation in light of changes in society and cultural standards

The Civil War as Myth and Reality
The Crusade Against Slavery, 1830-1860
Perhaps no other crusade in the history of the U.S. provoked so much passion and fury as the struggle over slavery. Many of the problems that were a part of that great debate are still with us. Louis Filler has brought together much information both known and new on those who organized to defeat slavery. He has also re-examined the anti-slavery movement's ideals, heroes, and martyrs with historical perspective and precision. Contrary to popular b…

John Knox is come at last, on whom neither money nor politeness nor hard words nor rotten eggs nor kicks and brickbats make the slightest impression. He is fit to meet the barroom wits and bullies; he is a wit and b…
