  • The many boar identities: Understanding difference and change in the geographies of European wild boar management

    Open Access•Emma Von Essen, Kieran O’mahony et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Environmental Planning…•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 22

Wildlife management across Europe is increasingly characterised by a 'war on wild boar'. In response to epidemiological and economic threats to pig production and agriculture, state agencies, policymakers and hunting organizations have altered their management as they attempt to contain wild boar. Through a cross-section overview of eight European countries with differentiated strategies - the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Great Britain, Norwa…

  • Reversible pigs: An infraspecies ethnography of wild boars in Barcelona

    Open Access•Aníbal García Arregui•ARTICLE•American Ethnologist•2023•Cited by: 16•References: 69

The idea of "species" is the main unit for representing ecological relations. But what would an ecology look like if we started by tracing its relations from below the species threshold? By deploying an infraspecies ethnography, I show how, in suburban Barcelona, human and wild boar individuals relate in personal, creative ways, and how in doing so, they also reshape their quotidian ecologies from the bottom up. Departing from species-level imagi…

  • Activating dark earths: Somatosoils and the carbonic loops of Amazonian ecologies

    Open Access•Aníbal García Arregui•ARTICLE•Journal of the Royal Anthropologica…•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 52

Inspired by the fertility and climate change-mitigation properties of the so-called Amazonian Dark Earths (ADEs), soil science has devised a technoscientific replica, a soil amendment known as biochar, intended to improve agricultural sustainability and carbon storage in the biosphere. Drawing on fieldwork with Afroindigenous horticulturalists, this article shows, however, that the activation of these soils' vibrant ecology responds to looping, c…

Revista de…•2021•Cited by: 1

  • Embodying equivocations: Ecopolitical mimicries of climate science and shamanism

    Open Access•Aníbal García Arregui•ARTICLE•Anthropological Theory•2020•Cited by: 6•References: 38

This article proposes a non-recursive detour for the perspectival concept of 'equivocation' by applying it to an ongoing ecopolitical approximation. I will describe how a Brazilian climatologist and a Yanomami shaman translate their concerns about the Amazonian rainforest in order to reach each other's audiences. Drawing on their public appearances and published texts, it will be argued that they mimetically rephrase their environmental thinking …

  • The Quilombola Movement: Sensing Futures in Afroindigenous Amazonia

    Open Access•Aníbal García Arregui•ARTICLE•Ethos•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 49

The "quilombola movement" is a political current that supports the legal emancipation and territorial autonomy of the descendants of runaway African slaves, called quilombolas in Brazil. As an alternative ethnographic approach, this essay accompanies Amazonian quilombolas through their "movement" in a literal-kinematic sense of the word, and as their characteristic ways of moving are "sensed" and imagined to exist in the future. Local body techni…

  • Positional Wildness: AmazonianRibeirinhos, Pink Dolphins and Interspecies Affections

    Aníbal García Arregui•ARTICLE•Ethnos•2020•Cited by: 7•References: 31

Amazonian pink dolphins figure in local imaginations as - enchanted - beings that can take on the appearance of persons and have sexual relations with humans. In the context of traditional fishing, ribeirinhos establish connections with dolphins that can be driven by intense corporeal intimacy, as well as by mutual hostility. These ambivalent positional relations are expressed in contrasted personal characterisations of dolphins, which are 'tame'…

  • Amazonian quilombolas and the technopolitics of aluminum

    Open Access•Aníbal Arregui, Aníbal García Arregui•ARTICLE•Journal of Material Culture•2015•Cited by: 8•References: 32

By drawing on field research, this article suggests that the impact of an aluminum mine on its neighboring quilombola communities can be analyzed from at least two interconnected technopolitical scales. The first relates to the anatomo-political discipline that the mine imposes over the body of its workers as well as to its inhibiting effect on the traditional body techniques of the populations that surround it. The second stresses a mine's ecolo…

  • Teoría’, ‘Inteligencia’ Y ‘Ciencia’ Como Índices Bajo-Amazónicos Del Conocimiento Incorporado

    Open Access•Aníbal García Arregui•ARTICLE•Amazônica - Revista de Antropologia•2014•Cited by: 3
