    Open Access•Nico Roymans, N G A M Roymans et al.•ARTICLE•Britannia•2020

This paper studies rural populations in the Roman frontier province of Germania inferior, employing a perspective that allocates more space to the exploitative and repressive aspects of Roman rule. We draw attention to an alternative series of topics than the ones currently presented in rural archaeology. This includes attention to situations of crisis and instability, to fundamental reordering of rural populations, to issues of migration and to …

    Ton Derks, A M J Derks•CHAPTER•Anthropologie de LAntiquite•2012

This paper presents an anthropologically informed approach to the study of rites of passage within the Roman Empire. It includes an historical case study and two archaeological ones taken from the empire’s Gallic and Germanic provinces. Open Access•Ton Derks, A M J Derks•ARTICLE•Archaeological Dialogues•1997•References: 18

I would like to thank the discussants of my essay for their pertinent questions, sincere criticisms and useful suggestions. Though I shall try to remove some of their hesitations to accept my interpretation of the observed patterns and correlations, it is already clear in advance that I shall not succeed in convincing each of them on all points on which we disagree. For while Oosten is defending the proposition that '[t]he phenomenal landscape ca…

  • The Transformation of Landscape and Religious Representations in Roman Gaul

    Open Access•Ton Derks, A M J Derks•ARTICLE•Archaeological Dialogues•1997•Cited by: 2•References: 18

This essay starts from the initial presupposition that the landscape is more than the proverbial backcloth to human action found so often in archaeological writing. It is not just the natural feature of the environment putting important constraints on human behaviour, as a popular 'naturalist' tradition in archaeology would like to have it, nor is it simply a cultural construction of human conceptions about the world, as its 'culturalist' counter…
